Scouting This Week's Opponents
Michigan State C The Spartans improved to 11-4-1 with a 4-0 win over Detroit last Sunday (Oct. 20). Following a 1-1 tie with Northwestern (Oct. 18) in its last Big Ten game, MSU has a conference record of 5-3-1 and sits in a tie with Purdue for third place. Junior forward Tiffany Laskowski (eight goals, five assists) is the Spartans' leading scorer with 21 points and notched the lone goal at Northwestern as well as tallying two assists against the Titans. Freshman forward Emma Harris follows Laskowski with 16 points on five goals and six assists. Midfielders Michelle Perun, a junior, and Erin Konheim, a freshman, have also jumped into the MSU offensive attack with 13 points (four goals, five assists). The Spartans' goaltending has been solid all season thanks to junior goalkeeper Stacy Heller. Heller has a 0.80 goals-against average and seven shutouts this season. Last Week
The Wolverines went 1-1 for the second consecutive week, dropping a non-conference test against No. 23 Notre Dame (Oct. 17) and winning a Big Ten matchup against Northwestern (Oct. 20). Michigan engaged the Fighting Irish in a defensive battle for 90 minutes, allowing the deciding goal in the 59th minute. Junior goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) made four saves for the Wolverines and senior forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) contributed two shots on goal.
With a 2-0 victory against Northwestern, Michigan improved to 6-2 in the Big Ten and clinched the second seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Junior forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute and Crumpton added an insurance tally eight minutes later to seal the victory.
No Luck With the Irish
With last week's 1-0 loss at the hands of Notre Dame, Michigan fell to 0-8 in the career series between the schools. Following the first meeting in 1997, the series has featured four one-goal games, two overtime decisions and two NCAA Tournament meetings.
Blue Streak
With its loss to Notre Dame, Michigan's 17-game home unbeaten streak, the longest in school history, came to an end. After losing their first home game of 2001 against Kentucky (Sept. 7), the Wolverines rebounded with a 1-0 win over Dayton (Sept. 9) and went on to earn nine more home wins. Before their first home loss this season on Oct. 17, Michigan had gone 8-0 at home in 2002. Michigan's previous longest home unbeaten streak was 14 games from Oct. 27, 1996, through Oct. 4, 1998, during which Michigan went 12-0-2.
On the Rebound
Following their four losses this season, the Wolverines have rebounded to outscore their next opponents 10-1, with three shutouts.
Difference Maker
Six of Stephanie Chavez's 17 career goals have been game-winners. She is currently tied for sixth among Michigan's career game-winning goal leaders.
Winner's Circle
With six shutouts, Suzie Grech has tied with Carissa Stewart's (1997-2000) 1999 total for the second most in a single season. Grech, who holds the single-season record with 11 shutouts (2001), is also Michigan's career shutout leader with 20. Additionally, Grech's 12 wins are the second best single-season total in school history, equaling her 2001 win total.
The Eight Team
With their win in last Sunday's contest, the Wolverines improved to 8-0 all-time against Northwestern, tying the school record for most victories against one team. With victories this season, Michigan has also earned its eight wins over Ohio State (Oct. 6) and Indiana (Oct. 13).
Triple Double
Senior forward Abby Crumpton scored her 10th goal of the season against Northwestern. Crumpton has now scored at least 10 goals in three of her four seasons at Michigan.
The Season So Far ...
Through 16 games, Abby Crumpton has tallied a team-leading 29 points (10 goals, nine assists). Her two points against Northwestern give Crumpton the ninth-best season point output in Michigan history, boosting her above Amber Berendowsky (1996-99), who scored 28 points in 1998.
Golden Years
With 110 career points, senior forward Abby Crumpton is within striking distance of becoming Michigan's all-time leader in points. Crumpton is only four points away from Kacy Beitel's (1997-2000) record of 114 points. Amber Berendowsky (1996-99) sits between Beitel and Crumpton in second place with 113 points. Crumpton has 42 goals and 26 assists in her career.
