The six recruits, all from the state of Michigan, include RHP Steve Boge (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS), 3B Dan Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS), LHP Michael McCormick (Grand Blanc, Mich./Goodrich HS), LHP Matt Petry (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS), OF Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield HS) and LHP Brad Seddon (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair HS).
"I'm very excited about this first group of early signees, especially since all six are from Michigan," said Maloney. "We are pleased with these players. I think this group complements our returning players for the 2004 season.
"This class is filled with student-athletes that have had a great deal of success in the classroom and on the field. They will play an important role in the future success of our program and they are players that will make the Michigan family proud."
Boge, a two-time all-district and all-region selection, has won eight games in each of the last two seasons and fanned 94 in 61.2 innings as a junior for coach Luke Epple. "Steve has an excellent fastball and a solid breaking pitch. He competes well and could be an impact player for us," added Maloney.
Lentz hit .340 with 19 extra-base hits, helping Brother Rice to the Catholic League championship under coach Bob Riker. Lentz joins Brother Rice teammate Matt Petry in signing with the Wolverines. "Danny works extremely hard and he is a leader," said Maloney. "He should help us and could make an early contribution."
McCormick was 9-1 with a 1.76 ERA in 2002 for coach Bob Foreback in helping lead Goodrich to its sixth conference championship is seven years. He fanned 102 and walked just 18 in 59.2 innings. "Michael has a passion for the game," Maloney observed. "His best days are ahead of him, and if he works hard in our strength and conditioning program he has a bright future."
Petry, the son of former Detroit Tigers pitcher Dan Petry, earned All-Catholic League honors in 2001 and 2002 for coach Bob Riker and was 7-1 with a 1.01 ERA as a junior with 50 strikeouts in 54 innings. "Matt has command of three pitches and he knows how to use them. He knows how to pitch," said Maloney.
Rose hit .350, scored 63 runs and collected 36 stolen bases while earning all-state honors on Blissfield's state championship team a year ago playing for coach Larry Tuttle. "Eric is an excellent defensive centerfielder. He has outstanding speed on both offense and defense, and that was a priority in our recruiting," said Maloney.
Seddon earned second team all-state honors as a junior and was named the Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher for St. Clair High School He was 10-1 with 116 strikeouts as a junior while pitching for coach Rich Mallwitz. "Brad is a three-sport star with a definite upside and he is a winner," added Maloney.
