COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Colby Turner had a big day at the plate to help power the Michigan offense to a 17-5 victory over Maryland in seven innings on Saturday (May 2) at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The win also clinched U-M's sixth straight series.
Already up 1-0 after the first inning, Michigan (28-17, 13-9 Big Ten) sent 14 men to the plate, scoring nine times on nine hits with six singles, two doubles and a home run.
Dane Morrow started with a one-out double before singles from Drew Culbertson and Evan Haeger.Colby Turner doubled, followed by a single from Joonsung Park and a three-run homer from Brayden Jefferis to put the Wolverines up 7-0. Noah Miller kept the train rolling with the seventh straight hit, and Cooper Mullens and Matthew Ossenfort followed with singles of their own. A strikeout ended the hit streak, but the Wolverines drew two more walks and scored two more runs on wild pitches to grab a 10-0 lead early.
Shane Brinham (4-3) held Maryland (22-24, 6-16 Big Ten) to just one hit -- a bunt single -- over the first three frames.
A three-run Turner homer extended Michigan's lead to 13-0 in the fourth. Park and Jefferis reached following the home run, but were left stranded as a flyout ended the inning. The Terrapins got on board in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on one hit and five walks to cut its deficit to 19 at 13-4.
A single and a pair of walks set up the Terrapins with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Slade Moore, who came on in relief of Brandon Mann, forced a fielder's choice for the first out, but it scored a Maryland run. Morre struck out the next two batters to end the potential rally, and U-M led 13-5 heading into the seventh.
The Wolverines again extended their lead to double digits with a four-run seventh inning. Ossenfort and Morrow reached on one-out walks and Culbertson singled to score Ossenfort from second. After a flyout, Turner homered to left field, his second of the day, to put the Wolverines in run-rule territory at 17-5.
Moore pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to secure the victory over Maryland and take the series with one game remaining.
Turner paced the offense, going 4-for-5, including his two home runs, seven RBI and four runs scored. Jefferis collected four RBI, and Morrow and Culbertson each scored three times. Brinham picked up his fifth win, going five innings and allowing four runs on three hits.
The Wolverines will close out their series against the Terrapins at 1 p.m. on Sunday (May 3) at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The series finale will be streamed live on B1G+.
