DETROIT, Mich. -- In the final regular-season road match of the season for the University of Michigan men's soccer team, the Wolverines battled host Detroit Mercy to a 1-1 single-overtime tie Tuesday (Nov. 3) at Titan Field. The teams only played one 10-minute extra frame due to darkness.
Junior transfer Jürgen Schmieder (Regensburg, Bavaria/Stifland Gymnasium) tallied Michigan's lone goal of the match when he struck the ball out of the air on a Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS) serve to give the Wolverines (8-6-2) an early 1-0 advantage. Schmieder had recently checked into the game and had not touched the ball up to the point he beat the Detroit keeper along the left post at 15:16.
The goal was Schimeder's seventh of the year and first since his hat trick at Evansville (Sept. 27).
Defensively, freshman goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) improved his record to 5-1-1 between the pipes with seven saves in his 100 minutes of action. Dzubay held the Titans off the scoreboard until the 64:09 mark, when a Michigan foul in its penalty area resulted in a penalty kick by George Kithas.
Sophomore defender Dawson Stellberger (Crested Butte, Colo./Crested Butte Academy) was a major contributor to the Wolverines' defensive effort as he marked Titans sophomore forward Ablaye Camara, who in the first 20 minutes recorded two shots on goal. Stellberger held Camara in check the rest of the match as Camara registered one shot the rest of the way.
The Wolverines wrap up their regular season Saturday (Nov. 9) as they host Oakland at 1 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field. This match was rescheduled from Sept. 20 after heavy rain and lighting caused unplayable conditions on Elbel Field.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "Overall it was a game that both teams wanted to win, but knew that the a tie wouldn't hurt. The players played hard from both teams, but the field and the conditions made it hard to get any kind of offensive flow going. The 1-1 tie is a fair and justified result for both teams."
On Jürgen Schmieder's knack for scoring ... "Jürgen is a guy who in games plays big and he did it here again today. We have always wanted to see more of him in practice, but with the vacancy caused by Knox Cameron, he is going to get more playing time for us. If he continues to average a goal a game it is going to be difficult not to play him."
On the defensive leaders ... "Peter Dzubay was fantastic in goal for us again today. Dawson Stellberger was the defensive star for us though. He was marking their most dangerous player and did a great job. We made the switch about 20 minutes into the match and Dawson neutralized a great individual player."
NOTES
• Peter Dzubay improved to 5-1-1 with the tie at Detroit. The freshman made seven saves to remain unbeaten in six consecutive starts.
• Jürgen Schmieder now has seven goals in 10 games in his first season wearing the Maize and Blue. Schmieder is the only player in the program's three-year existence to score hat tricks in two games. He tallied a natural hat trick against IUPUI (Sept. 6) then netted three more goals at Evansville (Sept. 27).
• Kevin Robinson has contributed to the last two Michigan goals with his assist to Schmieder today. Robinson scored the overtime game-winner to beat Ohio State in the Wolverines' Big Ten Conference finale last Sunday (Nov. 3). Robinson has seven points on two goals and three assists in 2002.
• Michigan is now 4-5-3 all-time in overtime contests. The Wolverines have posted a record of 1-1-2 in extra time this season, including a 1-0 OT defeat of Ohio State on the U-M Soccer Field last Sunday (Nov. 3).
