COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan volleyball team's four-match winning streak came to a halt tonight (Friday, Nov. 8) with a 3-1 (28-30, 30-20, 30-20, 30-28) loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes at St. John Arena. Katrina Lehman (Bloomfield, Hills, Mich./Marian HS) and Nicole Poquette (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) led the Wolverines with 10 kills each, while Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) posted a team-high 11 digs. Setter Lisa Gamalski (Milwaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial HS) tied her career high with nine kills and chipped in 36 assists.
Lehman, Poquette and Gamalski led the way as the Wolverines' usual hitting leaders struggled in the match. Gandolph (7-5-31, .065), Chantel Reedus (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) (6-5-19, .053) and Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS) (8-9-32, -.031) combined to hit just .024 (21-19-82).
Michigan (14-9, 8-5 Big Ten) started game one well and quickly built a 15-10 lead, forcing Ohio State to take a timeout. The Wolverines held the lead through 23-18 before the Buckeyes closed the gap to one point at 24-23. OSU took a 28-26 lead late in the game, but Michigan scored the last four points for a 30-28 victory.
Ohio State (12-10, 5-8 Big Ten) switched roles with the Wolverines in game two. The Buckeyes grabbed a 7-1 lead from the start but allowed U-M to draw within one at 10-9. From there on out, it was all OSU. Ohio State outscored Michigan two-to-one the rest of the way for a 30-20 victory to even the match at one game each.
Game three was close, with the teams within one point when Ohio State held a 17-16 lead. Michigan stayed with the Buckeyes for a couple more points, and the Wolverines were trailing 20-18 before OSU scored 10 of the last 12 points to win its season consecutive game by a score of 30-20 and take a 2-1 games lead in the match.
The fourth game was much like the third. The teams were close through the majority of the match and were tied at 20-20 before OSU grabbed a 23-20 lead and Michigan called timeout. The Wolverines scored following the break, but Ohio State maintained its lead for a 30-28 victory to win the match and keep Michigan winless (0-23) in Columbus.
Michigan looks to get back on the winning track tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 9) when it takes on the Indiana Hoosiers at the University Gym in Bloomington, Ind. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
