POWAY, Calif. -- One day after hurling the third perfect game in University of Michigan softball history, Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) was back on the mound Sunday (Feb. 17) and combined with sophomore Meghan Ritter (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) for a five-inning one-hitter in a 9-0 shutout of Pittsburgh. Young struck out nine and allowed one hit in four innings of work.

The Wolverines scored in every inning except the second on their way to collecting 15 hits in the win. Doe manufactured the only Michigan run of the first inning when she singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Monica Schock's (Rialto, Calif./Eisenhower HS) sacrifice fly. Doe also started the two-run Michigan third with a single and scored on Schock's double to centerfield, Michigan's only extra-base hit of the game. Schock eventually came around to score on a single by Courtney Betley (Corona, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS).
Michigan put the game away with a four-run fourth on six hits, including a two-run single from Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS). Schock delivered her third RBI of the day with another sacrifice fly before Young helped her own cause with an RBI single to score Volpe for the fourth run of the inning.
Freshman catcher Lauren Holland (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) came off the bench to pinch hit in the fifth and ended the game with a two-run single -- the first hit of her young career -- to give Michigan the 9-0 run in five innings by virtue of the mercy rule.
Michigan goes back on the road next week for the annual National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic from Feb. 22-24 in Columbus, Ga. The Wolverines open up pool play on Friday (Feb. 22) against Connecticut (5 p.m.) and Mississippi State (7:30 p.m.).
