Wolverines Fall at Long Beach State, Drop Third Straight

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Despite outscoring Long Beach State 5-2 in the fourth quarter, the Michigan women's water polo team was unable to overcome an early 6-1 deficit and fell 11-8 on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at the 49er Campus Pool. The Wolverines managed to cut the 49ers lead to three goals on three separate occasions but every time LBSU responded. U-M's Erin Brown (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) and Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) each scored two goals, while Ashley Richardson tied a career high with five goals for the Beach.
The Wolverines fell behind early with two quick goals from LBSU. Brown's first goal only interrupted the 49ers run as they scored four more consecutive goals to give them a 6-1 lead midway through the second period. A pair of quick goals from Nisbet and Sheetal Narsai (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens HS) cut the deficit to three. The Beach scored on their final possession of the half to take a 7-3 lead into the intermission.
For the third straight game, Michigan struggled coming out of the break and LBSU was able to take advantage by outscoring U-M 2-0 in the third quarter to extend its lead to a game-high six goals. The Maize and Blue mounted its comeback bid by scoring the first two goals of the final stanza. Brown's second goal, with 1:28 left to play, once again cut the lead to three goals, 10-7. That was as close as Michigan would get as each team added one more goal in the last minute of play.
Michigan will finish its California swing tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 27) in San Diego, Calif., with a doubleheader against San Diego State at 2 p.m. PST in Bud Kearns Pool and Cal-San Diego at 6 p.m. PST in the Canyonview Pool.
