Olds joins a class that already consisted of utility player Stephanie Bercaw (Wooster, Ohio/Hillsdale HS), infielder Tiffany Haas (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothills HS), infielder Grace Leutele (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena HS) and pitcher Jennie Ritter (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS).
"We really like [Olds'] potential as a hitter and she is a good enough athlete to possibly play first or third base for us," commented Michigan coach Carol Hutchins. "Her ability to hit for power is a great asset, especially considering how big of a role the home run is starting to play in college. We also feel she will be a great fit for our program as well as a great representive of the University of Michigan."
Olds, who will be a junior for the Wolverines in 2003, comes to Ann Arbor after leading Lansing Community College to consecutive NJCAA Division II World Series appearances in 2001 and 2002, including a runner-up finish in 2001 and the national championship in 2002. Olds was named World Series MVP following LCC's national title run this past season. Additionally, Olds garnered NJCAA Division II and Louisville Slugger/NFCA NJCAA Division II All-America first-team honors in both 2001 and 2002 as a utility player.
Olds led the nation with 30 home runs in 195 at-bats -- one home run every 6.5 at-bats -- in 2002 while also compiling a .513 batting average, 85 RBI and 16 doubles in 56 games. Similarly in 2001, Olds also led the nation with 30 home runs in just 175 at-bats while hitting .480 with 98 RBI and 14 doubles in 57 games.
