Hopwood, Freshman Trio Help Wolverines Down Hoosiers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won its third straight Big Ten Conference dual meet with a 174.5-122.5 defeat of No. 25 Indiana Saturday afternoon (Jan. 18) in Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines took the top spot in 11 of 14 swimming events but exhibitioned the final two races of meet. Included in Michigan's 11 victories were a pair of individual titles each by freshmen Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS).

Tarwater posted victories in the 100- and 200-yard butterflies as the freshman touched the wall in 49.08 and 1:47.27, respectively. Tarwater earned an NCAA consideration time in the 200-yard race as he clocked in 0.80 seconds better than the NCAA "B" standard.
Vanderkaay, the reigning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, won both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles. The freshman earned his seventh NCAA consideration time in the 500-yard free as he touched the wall in 4:24.72, while his time of 9:03.03 took the top spot in the 1,000-yard event.
Also earning a pair of individual event titles was fifth-year senior co-captain Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS). Hopwood won both breaststroke events as he clocked in at 56.63 in the 100-yard and 2:02.59 in the 200.
Junior Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) and senior Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) also posted individual wins as Ketchum took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.87), while Mangieri won the 100-yard freestyle (45.03).
Michigan's 200-yard medley relay set the stage for the Wolverines as the foursome of DeJong, Hopwood, Tarwater and Mangieri touched the wall in first place with a season-best and NCAA consideration time of 1:31.01.
The Wolverines also had the top times in the final two events of the meet but exhibitioned the two winners. Sophomore Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS) posted the fastest time in the 400-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 3:58.30, and the foursome of Mangieri, Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS), Ketchum and DeJong posted a time of 1:23.09.
In the Dick Kimball Diving Well, junior Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS) recorded two NCAA zone diving qualifying marks en route to a pair of runner-up finishes. Coben scored 333.82 on the one-meter and 342.00 on the three-meter springboard to finish behind the Hoosiers' Marc Carlton in both events.
Michigan has a week off from competition before hosting Big Ten opponents Northwestern and Ohio State. The Wolverines face Northwestern on Friday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. and Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. in Canham Natatorium.
