Wolverines Capture First Place at Michigan Intercollegiate

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team earned its second meet title of 2003 with a first-place team score of 187 at the Michigan Intercollegiate on Friday (Jan. 31) at Eastern Michigan University's Bowen Field House. The Wolverines won 10 of 15 events at the scored meet, including a sweep of the events between the distances of 400 and 5,000 meters.
Senior/junior Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) earned her second 400-meter dash title of the year when she clocked in with a team season-best time of 56.09. Knazze's time bettered runner-up Krisy Mahome of Western Michigan by just .02 seconds as the Bronco crossed the line in 56.11.
In the 800-meter run, senior co-captain Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) headed up a 19-point showing by the Wolverines when she posted a team season-best time of 2:09.55 to win the event. Following Sturtz into the line was sophomore Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS), who finished second at 2:10.30. Sophomore/freshman Jennifer Wendling (Chesaning, Mich./New Lothrop HS) finished sixth at 2:16.34.
Freshman Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS) continued Michigan's winning ways when she clocked in with a first-place time of 4:52.22 in the mile run. Running close on Erdman's heels was runner-up Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS), who set a personal-best time at 4:52.76, bettering her three-week-old mark of 4:59.17 set at the Jack Harvey Invitational (Jan. 11). Sophomore/freshman Sarah Pizzo (Golden, Ohio/Mullen HS) finished third at 5:06.99.
Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) clocked in with a personal-best time in the 3,000-meter run as she won the race in 9:39.82. Gallo crossed the line nearly 20 seconds ahead of her closest competition, Kim Hemstreet of Detroit (9:57.89).
Michigan won its final individual distance race of the evening when freshman Amy Baker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) earned the first collegiate victory of her career as she crossed the finish line of the 5,000-meter run in 18:11.39.
Senior co-captain Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) won the triple jump with a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 41-6 1/2. The distance surpassed her previous jump of 40-7 1/2 set last year at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships (5/19/02).
Other event winners were senior tri-captain April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS), senior/junior Robin Landfair (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and sophomore Jennifer Kulchar (Burton, Mich./Atherton HS). Phillips claimed her fourth consecutive shot put title of the season as she improved her season-best mark with an NCAA provisional distance of 51-1. Landfair posted her the third victory of 2003 in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.81. Following Landfair across the finish line was junior Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) with a time of 8.87. In the high jump, Kulchar earned her first career victory when she cleared the height of 5-5 3/4.
The Wolverines travel to South Bend, Ind., and the campus of the University of Notre Dame for the two-day Meyo Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 7-8). Field events begin at 5:30 p.m., while running events get underway at 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday's action opens with field events at 11 a.m. and running events begin at 1 p.m. in the Loftus Sports Center.
