Senior tri-captain April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) earned all five of Michigan's points when she finished fourth in the shot put with a school-record throw of 55-0 on Friday (March 14). Phillips' fourth-place performance is the best finish for a Wolverine shot putter at the national meet since Sonya Payne (1987-89) placed second at the 1988 indoor meet. It also marks the second All-America honor of Phillips' career and her first in indoor competition. She earned All-America honors at the outdoor national meet in 2002 when she placed 12th in the hammer throw.
Also earning All-America honors was fellow senior tri-captain Rachel Sturtz (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS), who finished 10th overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.86 in the preliminaries of the event Friday night.
With Phillips and Sturtz collecting All-America citations, it marks the first time since 1999 Michigan has had more than one athlete earn the prestigious honor. At the 1999 indoor national meet, the distance medley relay team of Lisa Ouellet (1997-2001), Adrienne Hunter (1998-2001), Sarah Hamliton (1996-2000) and Katie McGregor (1996-99) placed seventh and high jumper Nicole Forrester (1996-99) finished third.
The Wolverines open their 2003 outdoor season next Thursday through Saturday (March 20-22) when the Maize and Blue heads south to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the non-scoring Florida State Relays.
