Wolverines Down Golden Panthers to Finish First in Pool

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The 14th-ranked University of Michigan softball team closed out a 3-0 day Saturday (March 8) with a 5-2 win over Florida International at the Seminole Invitational. Michigan finished as the only unbeaten team (3-0) in Pool C and moves on to play Troy State in tomorrow's (Sunday, March 9) semifinals of the gold bracket at noon. Troy State finished first in Pool D after pulling off a 4-3 upset of third-ranked Nebraska in eight innings.
Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) allowed two runs through four innings for her seventh win of the season, while Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) provided the offensive work with a double, single and two RBI. Meghan Doe (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) added two hits while Nicole Motycka (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney HS) threw three shutout innings in relief.

Marissa Young moved into sole possession of third place on the Michigan career list for wins with her 73rd career victory. Young's scoreless innings streak of 27 innings was snapped when she gave up two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
