U-M Dominates Salem in Southern Division Championships

LEWSIBURG, Pa. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team exploded with a 19-2 victory today (April 11) over Salem International University at the Southern Division Championships in Lewisburg Pa. Michigan (17-9) converted eight out of ten power play opportunities and all 16 of the Wolverine's field players scored in the contest. Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) led all scorers with her third career hat trick and Stephanie Rupp (Hemet, Calif./Hemet HS) chipped in with a pair of markers. Kristin Hoogenboom (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) and Casey Kerney (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park HS) each set career highs with four and three assists, respectively. Kerney also tied a career high with four drawn kick-outs.
Michigan got out of the gates quickly and held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. Michigan continued to dominate with four goals in the second quarter, but Salem International finally got on the board with a tally late in the period. In the third quarter, Michigan outscored Salem International 5-0 to take a commanding 15-1 lead into the final stanza. Salem International scored again in the final quarter, but the Wolverines produced four more markers to make the final score 19-2.
Michigan next plays at 9 a.m. Saturday (April 12) against the winner of the Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst game in the second day of the Southern Division Championships. If the Wolverines win tomorrow morning, they will play in the semifinal contest at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
