PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) of the University of Michigan men's soccer team garnered Big Ten Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week honors Monday (Sept. 1) following his three-point performance (goal and assist) to lead the Wolverines past No. 22 Loyola Marymount in their season opener Sunday (Aug. 31) at the Michigan State Invitational. Turpin wasted no time earning his third point of the year as he set up Cameron just 59 seconds later. Following a long pass up the left side by goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) Turpin carried the ball into Lion territory where he drew three defenders, allowing Cameron to find open space 13 yards from the front of the goal mouth. Once Cameron was in definite scoring posistion, Turpin sent the ball into the middle of the goal box for an easy Cameron goal.
It marks the third time in the program's four-year existence a Michigan player has received the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award. Last season Cameron received the honor on Sept. 9, while Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS) earned the award on Nov. 4.
The Wolverines conclude their first weekend of action today with a 2:30 p.m. match against Xavier at the Michigan State Invitational on Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich.
