ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team opened its 2004 season with a strong performance, as the Wolverines posted five event titles at the non-scoring Jack Harvey Invitational held Saturday (Jan. 10) in the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Headlining the performances for the Maize and Blue were senior quad-captains Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) and Robin Landfair (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS), senior/junior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS), junior/sophomore Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS), junior Jennifer Kulchar (Burton, Mich./Atherton HS) and sophomore Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS), all of whom claimed victories in the first meet of 2004.
Kulchar started things off for the Maize and Blue when she earned a first-place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-6. Placing second in the event was sophomore Porsha Ellis (Farmington Hills, Mich./Southfield Christian HS), who cleared 5-4 1/4.
Feldkamp gave Michigan its first track victory of the year, as she crossed the finish line of the mile run with a first-place clocking of 5:03.47. Following Feldkamp across the finish line were a trio of Wolverines, as Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian HS), Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and Sarah Pizzo (Golden, Colo./Mullen HS) finished 2-3-4 with times of 5:03.79, 5:06.27 and 5:06.96, respectively.
Landfair opened her season right where she left off last year, leading the pack in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.75. Landfair was the sole hurdler to break the nine-second barrier. Fellow senior quad-captain Doris Simmons (Cassopolis, Mich./Ross Beatty HS) was second in 9.15.
Knazze continued the Michigan success when she posted her first victory of the new year with a time of 7.73 in the 60-meter dash. Knazze's time was 0.16 seconds quicker than runner-up Shakera Pinto of Eastern Michigan.
The Wolverines then went on to win the next two races as Erdman and Gallo posted wins in the 600- and 800-meter runs. Erdman, the 2003 Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year, demolished the field in the 600, crossing the finish line in 1:31.57, 2.59 seconds ahead of her nearest competition, Janaule Bennett of Western Michigan (1:34.16). Gallo was equally impressive in the 800, leading a 1-2 Michigan finish by clocking in at 2:13.20, 2.53 seconds ahead of teammate Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS).
Though she no longer has collegiate eligibility, former Michigan All-American April Phillips (2000-03) took home a pair of victories in the shot put and weight throw. Phillips marked a distance of 48-3 1/4 to win the shot put and 57-7 1/2 to claim the weight throw title.
Michigan will take to the track and field next Saturday (Jan. 17) when the Wolverines head to Bloomington, Ind., for a dual meet with archrival and Big Ten opponent Indiana. Field events begin competition in Gladstein Fieldhouse at 9:30 a.m., with running events scheduled to get underway at noon.
