ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The No. 13 University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to Oakland Thursday afternoon (Oct. 14) at the OU Soccer Field. The Wolverines finished the game with a 14-4 advantage on the shot chart and dominated the corner kick count by an 11-0 margin, but Kristi Swaving was able to find the back of the net in the 54th minute to send the Golden Grizzlies to the non-conference victory.
After a defensive battle in the first half, which saw the two teams combine for just six shots, Swaving collected the ball on the counterattack and beat her defender one-on-one before firing a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) and into the side netting to put Oakland on top 1-0 at 53:26. Swaving's goal was one of just two shots Tuura faced the entire game.
Michigan was the aggressor on offense for the remainder of the contest, outshooting the Grizzlies 9-1. Unfortunately, the Wolverines were unable to break through OU's back line of five defenders and got off just three attempts on net. Oakland goalkeeper Jessica Howard was able to get a hand on every U-M shot, finishing the game with five saves.
The Wolverines (9-4-2, 6-1-1 Big Ten) continue their five-game road stretch Sunday (Oct. 17) against Wisconsin. The match is slated to start at 1 p.m. CDT at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On Michigan's difficulty with its offensive generation ... "Oakland bunkered the entire game, where they had five on defense, four in the middle and just one forward up front. It made it very difficult for us to break through. We had to work the ball to the side and rely on the crosses. We had some near misses and had the advantage on corner kicks, we just couldn't make anything happen."
N O T E S
Freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) finished with a game-high seven shots.
Michigan suffered its second shutout loss of the season. The Wolverines fell to Penn State by a 1-0 score on Oct. 1 at the U-M Soccer Field.
U-M drops to 5-2-1 all-time against Oakland.
