MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 13 University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped its second straight game with a 3-1 loss to Wisconsin Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17) at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Badgers scored a pair of goals in the first 19 minutes of the game and added another in the 65th minute to seal the victory and send the Wolverines (9-5-2, 6-2-1 Big Ten) to their second Big Ten conference loss of the season.
Wisconsin used a penalty kick from Amy Vermeulen at 12:52 to gain the early advantage, and Marisa Brown took a ball from Vermeulen just six minutes later to put the Badgers ahead 2-0 at 18:41. The Wolverines had a more difficult time finding their offensive touch early on, as they failed to convert on five first-half corner kick opportunities and finished the first 45 minutes with just one shot on goal.
Unfortunately for Michigan it was not a tale of two halves, as the Badgers added an insurance score off a free kick by Kara Kabellis at 64:24 and the Wolverines got off just one more shot on net and could not put anything together on a majority of their set pieces.
Michigan's lone bright spot of the game came at 67:34, when sophomore Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) knocked home a goal off a Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) corner kick to cut the Wisconsin lead to two goals.
The Wolverines complete their five-game road stretch Friday (Oct. 22) against Michigan State. The match is slated to start at 3 p.m. at Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich.
