This Week
The No. 19 University of Michigan men's soccer team will kick off its Big Ten schedule with a road game at No. 3 Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m. EST at IU's Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. Michigan will then travel to face No. 15 Notre Dame on Wednesday, Oct. 13 in South Bend, Ind. The match against Notre Dame will mark the end of a six-game road trip for the Wolverines.
Scouting the Opponents
Indiana -- The third-ranked Hoosiers sit atop the Big Ten with a 7-2-0 overall record and a 2-0-0 mark in conference play. Indiana is coached by first-year head man Mike Freitag. The Hoosiers are led by Jacob Peterson with 14 points on seven goals and goalkeeper Jay Nolly with 24 saves and a 0.84 goals against average in 859:13 minutes of action. Indiana will bring a 48-game regular season conference unbeaten streak into its match against Michigan. The Wolverines have never beaten Indiana, posting an 0-5 record against the Hoosiers all-time. Notre Dame -- The 15th-ranked Fighting Irish are 7-2-1 this season under third-year head coach Bobby Clark. Notre Dame is led by Justin McGeeney with nine points on four goals and one assist and goalkeeper Chris Sawyer with 19 saves and a 0.59 goals against average in 912:27 minutes of action. Michigan tied Notre Dame last season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament only meeting between the programs all-time. However, the defeated the Irish in penalty kicks, 4-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Notre Dame on the Web: www.und.com.
Wolverines Play a Pair of Overtime Matches
The 19th-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team posted a 1-0-1 record in matches against Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 1 and Louisville on Sunday, Oct. 3. The Wolverines got back on the winning track with a 1-0 overtime victory at Kentucky. Junior defender Chris Glinski (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) redirected a shot by junior midfielder Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) at 92:04 to hand the Wolverines the win. Senior goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) earned the shutout in net for Michigan (7-1-1).
In their second game of the weekend, U-M earned its second draw of the season in a 1-1 match at Louisville. The Wolverines scored the first goal of the game with a marker by sophomore forward Bobby Trybula (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller HS) at 30:16, but a late goal by Louisville at 67:30 tied the game at 1-1, eventually sending the match into overtime. Neither team was able to come up with the game-winning goal in the two 10-minute extra sessions.
Familiar Foes
The Wolverines match against Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 10 will mark the start of Michigan conference schedule. The Wolverines are the last Big Ten team to begin playing conference games this season. In the program's four-year history, U-M is an even 12-12 in Big Ten matches, including a program-best 5-1 mark last season. The Wolverines' only conference loss last year came at the hands of Indiana, who will open U-M's league schedule this season.
Stingy D
The Wolverines are giving up only 0.67 goal per game through 10 games this season to lead the Big Ten in goals against average. Michigan is also leading the Big Ten with five shutouts this season, two of which have been notched by Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) and another two by Joe Zawacki. The pair is tied for second in the conference in the shutouts. A big part of Michigan's defense this season has been the play of the back four. The Wolverine defenders are allowing a slim 10.4 shots per game with just under four of those reaching net per contest.
Bonus Soccer
Four of the Wolverines' 10 matches this season have gone into overtime, including Michigan's last three contests. During that stretch, Michigan is 1-0-2 earning a win at Kentucky and draws at Long Island and Louisville. Michigan is 2-0-2 overall in overtime this season with the other win coming in U-M's second game of the season against Western Illinois. The Wolverines' four overtime games this season already rank as the second-most in program history. Michigan played in six overtime matches in the inaugral 2000 season.
That's A Lot of PT
In U-M's match against Louisville, junior defender Ryan Sterba (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) played in his 50th career game for the Maize and Blue and also made his 50th career start. Sterba is leading Michigan this season with a season-best five assists. In his career, the junior has compiled nine points, all on assists, 28 shots and 10 shots on goal.
Trybula Strikes Again
Sophomore forward Bobby Trybula took over the team lead with his fourth goal of the season in U-M's 1-1 draw at Louisville. Trybula has scored all four goals in U-M's past seven games of the season, including a two-goal performance in Michigan's 4-0 win against Bowling Green. This season, he has eight points on four goals with eight shots on goal.
Scoring Defense
Junior defender Chris Glinski has been an integral part of Michigan's offensive and defensive success this season. On the offensive side of the ball, he is tied for the team lead with eight points on three goals and a pair of assists. Prior to the season, Glinski had scored a total of eight points on three goals and two assists. He is also a key component in a Michigan defense that is allowing a mere 0.67 goals per game and only four shots on goal per game.
Denied
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Joe Zawacki posted his second shutout of the season and the sixth of his career in U-M's 1-0 overtime win at Kentucky. The senior followed that performance by only giving up one goal in 110 minutes at Louisville. He made three saves in each of the contests. This season, Zawacki has posted a 3-1-2 record with 16 saves and a 0.79 goals against average in 570:40 minutes of play.

The Book on Burns
Head coach Steve Burns is 41-31-4 in four seasons as the leader of Michigan's varsity program. Last season Burns guided the Maize and Blue to a second-place finish in the Big Ten and U-M's first NCAA Tournament appearance. Since his taking the helm in 2000, Burns' Wolverines have bettered their record in each of his first four years. Prior to Michigan soccer being granted varsity status on March 26, 1999, Burns was the head coach of the Michigan club team since 1993. Under his leadership, Michigan posted a 121-51-26 mark (.677 winning percentage) and made six consecutive appearances in the national club championship tournament. The team won back-to-back national championships in 1997 and 1998.
On the Horizon
Michigan will finally return home after a six-game road trip to face Big Ten rival Michigan State. That match is set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.
