TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Senior captain Nate Brannen (Cambridge, Ontario/Preston HS) of the University of Michigan men's cross country team was recognized as the NCAA Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association on Saturday (Nov. 20) at the NCAA Championships pre-meet banuet. Brannen was one of nine regional athletes to earn such distinction.

The Wolverine captain is the sixth Michigan runner to capture the individual regional title, joining four-time champion Kevin Sullivan (1993-95, '97) and John Mortimer (1996).
While Brannen has led the Wolverines across the finish line for seven consecutive races in which he competed, the regional victory was the first of his collegiate career in 24 cross country races over his four seasons at Michigan. His best finish in three previous NCAA regional appearances was a fourth-place showing last season. Brannen has boasted back-to-back NCAA All-America citations, claiming 22nd and 17th in 2002 and '03, respectively.
"It's a great honor to win this award," said Brannen. "There are a lot of great runners in the Great Lakes Region, and it is probably one of the toughest regions in the country. In addition to Wisconsin -- who has been ranked No. 1 all season -- I think there are six or seven teams generally ranked among the top 30, which makes it very competitive. To come out on top and win this award is pretty special. It's a nice way to wrap up my career with this regional win as well as the Regional Athlete of the Year award."
Brannen and the No. 13 Wolverines will hit the course for the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday (Nov. 22) at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Hosted by Indiana State University, the men's 10,000-meter race is slated for a 12:15 p.m. start.
