Wolverines Take Fifth Place at Boilermaker Challenge

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 17 University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished in fifth place at the 2004 Boilermaker Challenge Saturday (Nov. 6) at Purdue's Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Wolverines swam to four top-three finishes in the final nine events to finish with a total of 460.5 points after the two-day meet. Florida took home top honors with 748.5 points.
Sophomore Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles HS) achieved an NCAA automatic qualifying time for the second straight day, touching in at 16:20.85 for second place in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Gilliam also posted an NCAA consideration mark in the 200-yard freestyle, as she clocked in at 1:48.61 for another runner-up finish.
Three other Wolverine swimmers met the consideration standard, as sophomore Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.38), while classmate Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS) touched the wall right on the NCAA "B" standard of 56.10 to place seventh in the 100-yard backstroke. Brady nearly met a consideration mark in the 100-yard butterfly (55.36), as she clocked in at 55.84 for third place.
Freshman Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) rounded out Michigan's top performers on day two, swimming to a runner-up finish in the 400-yard individual medley with an NCAA consideration time of 4:19.14.
In the evening's only diving event, the three-meter springboard, sophomore Ellen Van Cleve (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) was the top Wolverine scorer with a total of 397.20 for eighth place.
Michigan returns home to host Ohio State this Friday (Nov. 12). The dual meet with the Buckeyes is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Canham Natatorium.
