INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team secured its eighth straight bid to the NCAA Tournament Monday afternoon (Nov. 8), and the Wolverines are slotted to face the University of Detroit (13-7-1) on Friday (Nov. 12) at 4:30 p.m. in first-round play at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
Should the Wolverines advance to the second round, they would face the winner of the No. 6 seed Buckeyes and Bowling Green on Sunday (Nov. 14) at 1 p.m. The Wolverines are coming off a 5-2 defeat to OSU in the Big Ten Conference Tournament semifinals last Friday (Nov. 5) in Columbus.
Michigan holds a 5-1 record in six all-time meetings against the Titans. U-M earned a 4-0 home shutout in its last meeting with Detroit on Sept. 17, 2001, including a pair of goals by current Wolverine seniors Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) and Laney Rosin (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton HS). The Titans earned an automatic bid by defeating Wisconsin-Milwaukee 1-0 in the Horizon League championship match last Sunday (Nov. 7).
Three other conference teams join Michigan and Ohio State in the field of 64. Big Ten regular-season champion Penn State is the No. 2 seed and will take on Binghamton, Illinois will match up with Rice, and Wisconsin squares off against Dayton.
The Wolverines, which are 11-8-2 and finished 6-3-1 in the Big Ten, solidified their spot in the postseason with a 2-1 victory over No. 25 Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals last Thursday (Nov. 4). Michigan also faced No. 13 Ohio State during the regular season, as they battled the Buckeyes to a 1-1 draw through two overtimes behind a first-half goal from freshman Kandice McLaughlin (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS).
The NCAA third and quarterfinal rounds will be held at campus sites. Third-round matchups will be played Nov. 19-21 and quarterfinals will be held Nov. 26-28. The four semifinalists will descend on Cary, N.C., Dec. 3-5 for the NCAA Women's College Cup, hosted by North Carolina State University and the Capital Area Soccer League.
