SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- With a win in the 500-meter run dash, freshman John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) led the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's track and field team on the first day of competition at the non-scoring Meyo Invitational on Friday (Feb. 6) at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center.
D'Arcy clocked a time of 1:02.93 to top the 12-man field by 0.23 seconds as runner-up Demondrick Shumaker from Mississippi posted a time of 1:03.16. The performance gave D'Arcy a team-leading third win of the season. The freshman has competed in just four collegiate races.
Also competing for the Wolverines were fifth-year senior captain Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS), who placed 11th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:48.60, as well as junior/sophomore Nick Vander Ploeg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) and freshman Chris McHugh (Nokington, R.I./Bishop Hendrickson HS), who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the weight throw. Vander Ploeg threw a personal-best mark of 51-5, surpassing his previous best by nearly two feet.
The Wolverines will be back in action tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 8) for the second and final day of competition at the Meyo Invitational. The morning session kicks off at 10 a.m. with the men's and women's 3,000-meter run.
