Underdog Wolverines Capture Big Ten Championship

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 10 University of Michigan women's rowing team posted a first-place finish today (Saturday, May 1) at the Big Ten Championships on Lake Macbride to take its fourth conference crown in the five years. The Wolverines pulled ahead of a close four-team pack with wins in the first and second varsity eight races to earn 128 points. Wisconsin (115 points), Ohio State (112) and Michigan State (111) finished second through fourth, respectively.
In the final race of the day, Michigan's first varsity eight pulled off an upset victory by defeating No. 1-ranked Ohio State by six seats, 6:48.4 to 6:50.4. In the morning's preliminary heats, the Buckeyes held off U-M by a 1.1-second margin, but the Wolverines were able to come through with points on the line.
The Maize and Blue's late surge to the top of the standings was set up by the second varsity eight's victory. U-M finished in 7:01.3 to edge Michigan State by just over three seats to gain a valuable 42 points. In all, Michigan captured 105 of its 128 points in the last two races of the regatta.
In earlier action, the second varsity four took second place with a time of 7:45.1, beating both Wisconsin and Minnesota by open water. The first varsity four finished fourth in the Grande Final to earn 12 points for the final team score.
Michigan will have the next weekend off before it attempts to ensure an NCAA Rowing Championships bid for itself when it competes at the Central Region Championships on May 15-16 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
