ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team played Syracuse to a 1-1 draw through two overtime periods Friday afternoon (Sept. 10) in the Michigan Classic at the U-M Soccer Field. The Wolverines struck first with a goal in the 52nd minute from junior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS), but the Orange netted the equalizer with 25 minutes remaining in regulation.
Michigan seized the offensive momentum for a majority of the first half, outshooting Syracuse 11-4. The Wolverines' first solid chance at a score came with just under 20 minutes left until the break, when Heaton chased a ball down the left side and got around two defenders before firing a shot at the near post, but SU goalkeeper Shannon Myers made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
Six minutes later, freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) found an opening at the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot through traffic, but her attempt went just wide of the right post.
Syracuse's lone opportunity at a goal in the first half came in the 34th minute, as Natalie Galas' free kick from the left sideline sailed over sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura's (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) head before deflecting off the crossbar.
The Wolverines nearly went into halftime with a one-goal advantage, as junior Katie Kramer (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) sent a ball up to a wide-open Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) on a three-on-two breakaway with 5:30 remaining, but Artsis misfired and the ball sailed left of the goal and out of bounds.
The Maize and Blue came out aggresively in the second half and created two corner-kick opportunities in the first three minutes of action, but both were cleared out by Orange defenders. Michigan was finally able to end the scoring drought with 38:46 to play. Artsis and Myers collided when both tried to chase down a loose ball in front of net, and the ball popped out to Heaton, who easily put it into the open net to give U-M a 1-0 lead.
The Orange scored the game-tying goal with just under 25 minutes left, as Sarah Elnicky headed the ball past Tuura after a Syracuse kick off the restart deflected off the crossbar and back into play.
Michigan continued to press later in the second half, with senior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) taking a pass in all alone with 32:45 to play, but she was called offsides. U-M had a chance to go ahead in the final three minutes, but two corner kicks by senior Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) were cleared out by Syracuse.
Each team had one prime scoring chance in the extra time, with Heaton's redirection on a Dobbyn shot going just high with 5:29 left in the second overtime, and Galas' long shot from the top of the box four minutes later also sailing over the net and out of play.
Earlier Friday in the first match of the Michigan Classic, Boston University earned a 3-0 shutout win over Oakland.
The Wolverines (2-2-1) return to action Sunday (Sept .12) when they face Boston University in the final game of the Michigan Classic. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field. That contest will be preceded by Oakland vs. Syracuse in an 11:30 a.m. match, and the U-M men will face Detroit on the U-M Soccer Field at 5 p.m.
