ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9 University of Michigan men's soccer team earned a 4-0 victory today (Friday, Sept. 17) over Bowling Green at the U-M Soccer Field. Michigan (6-0) held a 1-0 lead at the half and put up three goals in the second period to secure the win. Bobby Trybula (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) netted the Wolverines' first two goals of the game, and Steve Hecker (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) scored his first career goal. Kevin Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central HS) also scored his first career goal to give the Wolverines their best offensive output of the season.
For much of the first half neither team was able to create any scoring chances. The Wolverines finally broke through at 39:38 with Trybula's first goal of the game. Ryan Sterba (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) serviced the ball to the far post on a corner kick, finding Chris Glinski (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) for the header back across the net. Glinski sent the ball on to Kevin Savitskie (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS), who in turn sent it to Trybula. Trybula found the right side of the BGSU net with a header to make the score 1-0.
With three minutes to play before the half, Michigan had a chance to give itself a two-goal cushion heading into the locker room. Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) beat the defense down the left sideline, forcing BGSU goalie Brandon Decker to come out of the net. Turpin flicked the ball over to Jeff Mirmelstein (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS), who had one defender between him and the net. Mirmelstein's shot, however, sailed high and hit the crossbar, leaving the score at 1-0 at the half.
Michigan came out firing in the second half, scoring exactly one minute into the period. Sterba carried the ball down the left side of the field and found Trybula on a cross to the near post. Once again, Trybula found the back of the Falcons net with a header to make the score 2-0.
The next Michigan scoring opportunity came around the 70th minute when the Wolverines found Hecker making a run down the right side. With Decker coming out at him, Hecker dumped the ball across the net to Sterba for the shot. However, by the time Sterba fired, Decker had recovered to make the save and preserve the 2-0 score.
Five minutes later, at 75:29, Michael Parke (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) found Hecker on another run down the right side. This time, Hecker kept the ball and fired a shot across the net to the left post for U-M's third goal of the game. For Hecker, it was his first goal in a Michigan jersey, and for Parke, it was his first career assist.
The Wolverines added one more goal in the final three minutes of the game. After a BGSU foul, Brian Popeney (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) found Hall at the near post for a header at 87:15. Much like Trybula's goal before, Hall sent the ball to the left side of the Falcons net for the first goal of his career.
Michigan will take to the road for the next six games, starting with a match against Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. in Piscataway, N.J.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the team's performance ... "There are no easy games on our schedule until we make them easy. The boys came out and played with a lot of urgency and I think they put on a good overall display of what they are able to do as a team."
On the play of Bobby Trybula ... "Bobby is a guy that is very dangerous when there are balls bouncing around in the penalty box. He pounced on two opportunities and we know that is what he is good at. Today was definitely his day. He got the most of his minutes."
On the first half ... "I think in the first half we had trouble picking up second balls. That's the role of our three midfielders. You always look for something you need to improve on. I think in this game we saw that our central midfield wasn't sorting out the other team's midfielders quick enough to pick up those second balls. That is a difference maker in a game because that means they are picking up more possession of those second balls and creating more chances. For me, that is one of the keys of who is going to win the game."
On the offense output ... "Our percentage is still a little low for the kind of team we are. But this was a game where we take a lot out of it offensively. Now we are getting ready for a long trip on the road with six upcoming road games against some difficult opponents. I think we have done a good job preparing ourselves for tackling that part of the season."
U-M Sophomore Forward Bobby Trybula
On his first goal ... "I'm not sure what happened. The ball kind of bounced around and came to where I was supposed to be. I just put it in the back of the net."
On his overall performance ... "Overall, I am pretty happy with the team getting four goals. We haven't done that yet this season."
On the team's offensive performance ... "I am just happy we pulled together and scored four goals on a team we were supposed to beat."
U-M Freshman Midfielder Steve Hecker
On his first career goal ... "I was definitely excited. It is something that I've been looking forward to and working for. It was a good feeling to get my first goal."
