Michigan Slips by Golden Gophers in Double Overtime

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 16 University of Michigan women's soccer team fought out a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Minnesota Friday night (Sept. 24) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Freshman Kandice McLaughlin (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS) scored her first career goal in the 101st minute of play, allowing the Wolverines to stay perfect in the Big Ten Conference at 3-0.
McLaughlin's golden goal came with just over nine minutes remaining in the second extra session. After taking a corner kick from senior Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) and firing a shot off the crossbar, McLaughlin stayed with the play and collected a rebound on a shot by freshman Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) before finally putting it in the back of the net from 15 yards out for the game-winner.
The Wolverines had an opportunity to do damage early in the first half of action, but Minnesota goalkeeper Molly Schneider made two key saves on shots by Tanchon and freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) in the first three minutes. On the opposite end of the field, sophomore Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) kept the game scoreless with her first of five saves at 11:36.
Each team had one last chance at a goal before the halftime whistle, with Tuura making a huge stop on a shot by Regina Moench at 23:40 before Schneider did her part with a save on a strike by sophomore Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa HS) at 40:38.
Schneider was tested once again early in the second frame, as Dobbyn and Tanchon combined for three more shots on goal in the first 15 minutes. Dobbyn continued her furious attack on the Golden Gophers for the remainder of regulation, but her numerous attempts were either blocked by the Minnesota defense or saved by Schneider. The Gophers looked to close the door on Michigan in the final minute of the second half, but Tuura snagged a shot by Becky Dellaria at 89:01 to send the game into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime session, which saw each team fail to convert on a corner kick opportunity, the Wolverines controlled the ball to start the second extra period and eventually set up the game-winning sequence off Tanchon's set piece.
The Wolverines (6-2-1, 3-0 Big Ten) close out the weekend with a match against Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Game time is set for 1 p.m. CDT Sunday (Sept. 26) at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the win ... "It was a tough game. It was very high-tempo and hard-hitting out there and we had a difficult time getting the ball settled. We had a lot of shots outside the 18-yard box that just went wide. It wasn't a pretty game, but I don't think we played poorly. Minnesota just made it very difficult for us tonight. Megan (Tuura) did a great job and came up with a couple of great saves. She was really steady out there."
