Dobbyn's OT Winner Gives Wolverines First Win of 2004

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20 University of Michigan women's soccer team slipped by Kentucky 2-1 in overtime on Friday afternoon (Sept. 3) at the U-M Soccer Field. Freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) gave the Wolverines their first win of 2004 with a header in the 96th minute after junior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) got U-M on the scoreboard with a goal midway through the second half.
After sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) made the save of the game on a breakaway shot halfway through the extra period, Michigan took possession and advanced the ball to senior Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) at midfield. Tanchon's serve found the head of Dobbyn, who was able to direct the pass into the left corner of the goal past the reach of UK goalkeeper Anne Ogundele.
The Wolverines took control of the ball at the opening whistle and were awarded their first corner kick with less than 30 seconds off the clock. Tanchons attempt was right on target, but freshman Jamie Artsis(Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) shot was blocked by a Wildcat defender. Michigan continued to apply pressure down at the UK end, as sophomore Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) found a streaking Dobbyn from midfield, but her blast was slapped away by Ogundele with just under 40 minutes to play in the half.
The Wildcats collected the first goal of the game at 37:22, as Courtney McCrudden placed UKs first corner kick on the foot of Kristen Moyer, who redirected the ball into the lower left corner of cage to make the score 1-0.
Michigan had a great opportunity to even things up in the 17th minute, with Spencer taking the ball on a restart and advancing it up to Heaton on the right side, but Agundele was once again able to get a hand on the shot at the far post.
Kentucky wasted little time finding its touch in the second half, as Alli Haeusslers free kick in the opening minute was stopped by a diving Tuura. That would be UKs last solid offensive opportunity for nearly 25 minutes, as the Wolverines were able to control possession of the ball in the early stages of the half.
Heaton netted the equalizer with 26:06 left in regulation, corralling the rebound on a shot by Spencer and stuffing the ball into the left corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1. Kentucky was finally able to break into U-M territory with 20 minutes remaining, but Moyers header off a corner kick was grabbed out of the air by Tuura.
Michigan looked to take the lead three minutes later, when Heatons rebound off a shot by senior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) was just wide of the right post. The Wolverines continued to press, as Heatons header with 13 minutes left deflected off the crossbar and out of play. Time eventually became a factor and U-M prepared for its first overtime session of the young season.
The Wolverines (1-2) close out the weekend with a match against Ohio on Sunday (Sept. 5). Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the play of Melissa Dobbyn ... "Melissa is a goal-scorer. She has a nose for the goal. Some people just have a knack for that and she's one of those people. If she gets the ball near the goal, five out of 10 times she's going to score. She's so good on the ball that she can hold the ball and she just has an uncanny knack of getting in the right position. I was hoping that she would score goals for us and she's proven that she can put it in the back of the net."
