Late Surge Gives Wolverines Home Victory Over Ohio

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20 University of Michigan women's soccer team used a late offensive barrage from its frontline to earn a 3-1 victory over Ohio University on Sunday (Sept. 5) at the U-M Soccer Field. Three different Wolverine strikers scored goals in a span of just 2:18 late in the second half to provide Michigan with a come-from-behind win over the Bobcats and move its season record back to the .500 mark.
| | Morgan's game-winner came just 24 seconds after Heaton had knotted the score at 1-1. |
The Wolverines began to regain their rhythm midway through the second frame, as senior Laura Tanchon's (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) chip from inside the box was slapped up and over the crossbar by Meglaughlin with less than 30 minutes to play. The ensuing play saw junior Whitney Kjar (Sandy, Utah/Skyline HS) head a Tanchon corner kick just high of the net. Seven minutes later, junior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) got a foot on another Tanchon corner inside the box, but the shot was blocked by an OU defender.
Michigan finally got onto the scoreboard at 79:06, when Heaton took a rebound off a deflection and flicked it up over the head of Meglaughlin for the equalizer. Freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) took the loose ball off the restart and bent a cross to senior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS), who ran onto the ball at the far post and put it past Meglaughlin for the go-ahead goal just 24 seconds after U-M's first score.
The Maize and Blue continued its offensive onslaught with an insurance goal at 81:24. Dobbyn took a rebound off her own free kick and fired a shot into the right corner of the goal to seal the victory.
The Wolverines (2-2) return to the U-M Soccer Field next weekend to host the Michigan Classic. U-M will face Syracuse on Friday (Sept. 10) at 4 p.m. and Boston University on Sunday (Sept. 12) at 2 p.m.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the scoring surge late in the game ... "That always seems to happen to us. Once we get one goal, there are more to follow. Against a team like Ohio where you are presssing and pressing, you just need to get that one goal in."
On what the team can learn from the win ... "I think that coming from behind to win two games is something we haven't had to deal with too often and now we know we can do that. We are a young team and we're missing people with injuries. We just really need to sharpen up and pay attention to the simple things."
On Ohio scoring the first goal of the game ... "I think it was a shock to us because we had been dominating. You tend to get relaxed in a game like that and that's just a learning experience. We just need to take that lesson into the next team meeting."
Junior forward Therese Heaton
On her game-tying goal ... "You have to take what you can get, they don't all have to look pretty. We knew we needed to break the ice and get one in and we didn't care how we did it. As ugly as it was, it went in and opened the floodgates from there on."
On whether the offense was frustrated early on ... "You can give up or you can take the attitude that our team does and know that you can put the ball in the back of the net at anytime. We weren't going to let this one get away from us and we knew after the weekend in Texas that we had a lot to learn. We came out here and fixed a few things and got it done."
Freshman forward Melissa Dobbyn
On her goal off the restart ... "I was just trying to get the free kick on goal and make something happen, it just happened to come back out to me. I was hoping to get the ball over the wall, but fortunately it worked out well for us."
