MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Five top-10 finishes in the 500-yard freestyle propelled the fifth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team to a sixth-place standing with 94 points Thursday (Feb. 24) after the first day of the Big Ten Championships at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center. Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) paced the Wolverines with his third consecutive Big Ten championship in the 500 freestyle, breaking his own Big Ten Championships record (4:15.06 in 2004) with a time of 4:12.34. Minnesota sits atop the standings with 218 points.
After Michigan's 10th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, Vanderkaay led the Wolverines to 65 total points in the 500-yard freestyle. Following Vanderkaay to the wall were Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) in third at 4:20.37 and Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Trafalger) in sixth at 4:21.94. Brendan Neligan (Briarwood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) and Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) also bolstered U-M's scoring in the event, finishing ninth and 10th, respectively.
Michigan picked up 15 more points with three career-best times in the 200-yard individual medley. Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park) led the Wolverine contingent with a 10th-place finish in 1:48.78. Sayao was followed by Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) in 12th at 1:49.53 and Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum HS) in 14th at 1:49.87.
Michigan had no finalists in the 50-yard freestyle and the one-meter springboard diving, and the Wolverines were disqualified in the 400-yard medley relay. Michigan touched the wall in 3:11.21, which would have been good for second place, but the disqualification knocked the Wolverines off the podium.
The 2005 Big Ten Championships run through Saturday (Feb. 26) at the University Aquatic Center. Preliminary events are contested daily beginning at noon, and finals begin at 7 p.m. CST.
