U-M Team Standing: 1st Place of 10 Teams (40.5 Points) after Day 1
Next U-M Event: Sunday, Feb. 27 -- host Big Ten Indoor Championships
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two events titles -- in the distance medley relay and by fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) in the 3,000-meter run -- and point scorers in five of the six first-day events placed host University of Michigan atop the team standings after Saturday's (Feb. 26) action at the Big Ten Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Michigan had two scorers in the 3,000 meters, pole vault and shot put as well as garnering points in the pentathlon. The Wolverines, who also qualified 10 runners for Sunday finals, accumulated 40.5 points Saturday to lead second-place Minnesota (37 points) and third-place Michigan State (34) with six events scored and 12 event finals looming Sunday.
The Wolverines set or tied four records, with senior Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame) tying a school indoor record in the 60-meter dash and the facility mark in the 200-meter dash. Freshman Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) set a facility record in the 600-meter run before anchoring the DMR team -- which included senior/junior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele), senior Keri Kirk (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), junior Melissa Dunn (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) -- to a new U-M Track Building record (11:33.88).

Feldkamp (right) built a big lead on the 1,200-meter leg before handing off to Kirk in the distance medley relay.
In the distance medley relay, Feldkamp kicked off the 1,200-meter leg, opening up a sizeable lead over Illinois before passing the baton to Kirk for her 400-meter run. Kirk maintained a comfortable lead over Illinois, with Michigan State making up ground on the final backstretch. Dunn took the baton for the 800-meter leg, battling Illinois and Michigan State, which surged into the front to make it a dead heat heading into the final exchange.
Edwards took the handoff in for the final 1,600 meters and slipped in behind the lead runner for Michigan State, jockeying for second place with Illinois. The three pulled away from the rest of the field and MSU's Lisa Senakiewich and Edwards broke off on their own after 1,000 meters, threatening to lap the field. Edwards drafted behind the Spartan runner as they overtook the field in the last 400 meters, before making her move heading into the back stretch in the final 200 meters. Edwards shot past the Michigan State runner and surged to the finish, crossing the line nearly three seconds ahead of the Spartans to give U-M its third Big Ten DMR crowns in the last four years. Edwards also became just the fifth freshman in school history to help U-M claim a relay title.
In the 3,000-meter run, Gallo won her third individual Big Ten title and Michigan's second 3,000-meter run title in school history with a first-place finish of 9:27.26. Gallo and freshman Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) joined the lead pack for the first 2,000 meters, in the mix with Jaime Turilli and Cassie Hunt from Illinois and Iowa's Nikki Chapple. Gallo moved up to second with 800 meters remaining, while Kohlmeier pushed up as far as fourth. At the 2,600-meter mark, Gallo surged to the lead, outpacing both Illini runners and turning on the jets for the final 400 meters to win the event. Kohlmeier took seventh in 9:44.27 to become just the second U-M freshman in the last six championships to score for Michigan in the 3,000-meter run.
In the pentathlon, senior/junior Jennifer Williams (Burton, Mich./Atherton) took fourth place with a career-best and NCAA provisional qualifying 3,742 points thanks to career marks in the 60-meter hurdles (9.85), shot put (34-9 1/2) and long jump (17-7). She found herself in eighth place after four events, with only the 800-meter run remaining. Williams led for the first lap and dropped into second after 400 meters where she remained for the rest of the race, clocking in with a season-best time of 2:17.58 and moving up four places for her best finish at the indoor championships.
In the shot put, sophomore Bridgette Maynard (Madison, Mich./Bishop Foley) captured fifth place with a throw of 45-8 1/2, while senior Ashley Eckel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) placed sixth with a season-best throw of 45-7 to earn 12 points for the Wolverines, just two behind second-place Wisconsin (14 points) and three behind first-place Minnesota (15 points).
In the pole vault, fifth-year senior Lynn Gasparella (New Hudson, Mich./South Lyon) took fourth with a clearance of 11-9 3/4, while junior Kelly Catino (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central) tied for seventh with a clearance of 11-5 3/4. Michigan State's Mickie Rzepka set a new Big Ten Women's Indoor Championships and U-M Indoor Track Building with a clearance of 13-1 1/2 to win the event.
In the prelims of the 60-meter dash, Hauser-Price tied her own school record with a time of 7.45 for the second-fastest time in the qualifier. Ohio State's Jenna Harris set a facility record with a time of 7.43 to claim the fastest prelim time. Hauser-Price tied a facility record and set a career best in the prelims of the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 24.14 with the fastest time of the trials.
In the 600-meter run prelims, Edwards set a new U-M Indoor Track Building record with the fastest time of the trials, clocking in at 1:31.76 for a new personal best.
In the trials of the mile run, Gallo led her heat for the duration, clocking in with the second-fastest time of the preliminaries with a time of 4:51.22, while sophomore Jackie Gaydos (Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park) finished with the fifth-best prelim time, crossing in 4:52.69. Both athletes advance to Sunday's finals. Fifth-year senior Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) (4:54.62) and junior/sophomore Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) (4:56.11) narrowly failed to qualify with the 10th and 11th fastest times in the trials.
The Wolverines will make up a third of the finals field in the 800-meter run, with Feldkamp and fifth-year senior Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian) qualifying via top-two finishes in their heat and junior/sophomore Monica Dunn (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) advancing with the sixth best time of trials (2:14.26). In the second heat, Feldkamp finished first in 2:12.63, with Jones right behind her in 2:12.93. Feldkamp, Jones and sophomore/freshman Laura Glynn (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) ran as a pack through the first two laps before Feldkamp and Jones overtook Michigan State's Megan Radermacher to run in first and second through the finish. Glynn finished one spot out of the finals with a time of 2:15.52.
In the 400-meter dash trials, junior Shavonne Maclin (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School) and freshman Serita Williams (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) claimed a spot in Sunday's finals with times of 56.05 and 57.81, respectively, with the seventh and 10th fastest prelim times.
The second and final day of the Big Ten Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships begins Sunday (Feb. 27) at 10 a.m. with the weight throw.
