ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11 University of Michigan women's water polo team picked up two victories on Saturday (March 19) to open the Wolverine Invite at Canham Natatorium. Michigan started the tournament with an 8-3 victory over Brown and then cruised to a 14-1 win against Wheaton. The Wolverines came out strong in each contest, building a 4-0 lead against the Bears and a 7-0 advantage against Wheaton.
Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) and Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) led the Wolverines against Brown. Welch notched her 10th hat trick of the season, while Armstrong made 11 saves in net for Michigan. Against Wheaton Jamie Brown (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) and Amy Burgin (Walnut Creek, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) each recorded a hat trick, scoring four and three goals, respectively. Sally Stone (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) made nine saves against the Thunder.
In the opening game of the tournament against Brown, neither team was able to gain an immediate advantage. The Wolverines finally took the lead with a goal by Sheetal Narsai (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens HS) with 1:05 to play in the first quarter. Erin Brown (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) found Narsai all alone near the left post of the Brown goal for the easy score.
The Wolverines started the second period with a three-goal run to take a 4-0 lead with just under three minutes to play before the half. After winning the second-quarter sprint, Welch continued down the pool and received a quick pass from Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) for her first goal of the game. After Welch scored again to make the score 3-0, Jo Antonsen (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura HS) found Meg Knudtsen (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) for a power-play goal. Knudtsen received the pass at the right post and sent the ball near-side for the score. Brown answered with a goal at 1:50 of the second quarter to cut the lead to 4-1 after 14 minutes of play.
Michigan continued to control the game, scoring three straight goals in the the third quarter to open up a 7-1 advantage. Wesley Ellison (Portola Valley, Calif./Palo Alto HS) had a hand in two of the goals, sparking the run with a marker at 5:54 and then drawing a four-meter penalty at 4:15 which Narsai converted. Kristin Hoogenboom (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) then capped the run with her tally from two meters with 2:27 to play in the third quarter. Brown, however, responded with a pair of power-play goals to made the score 7-3 heading into the final period.
The Wolverines clamped down defensively in the fourth quarter, holding Brown without a goal in the period. Michigan secured the victory with Welch's third goal of the game with 3:56 to play.
Against Wheaton, Michigan stormed out of the gates to take a 5-0 lead after one period of play. Jamie Brown highlighted the run with the first three goals of the game, and Jennie Smith (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) finished the flurry with a score in the final minute of the first quarter.
The Wolverines continued to dominate the game in the second quarter, scoring two more goals on a penalty shot by Kaitlin Prijatel (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) and a backhand by Geraldine Hazlett (Modesto, Calif./Johansen HS) out of the hole set. Wheaton finally got on the scoreboard with a goal with less than one second to play in the half to made the count 7-1 at the intermission.
Michigan outscored the Thunder 7-0 in the second half to easily pick up the win. Jamie Brown started the second half with her fourth goal of the game and Burgin added all three of her markers in the final two periods, the last coming with 1:15 to play in the game.
