Gjesdal Regionally Qualifies in Steeplechase at Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Senior/junior Ana Gjesdal (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) recorded an NCAA regional-qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in first place in 10:41.25, as the University of Michigan women's track and field team competed in the Florida Relays Thursday (March 24) at the Percy Beard Track.
Gjesdal finished nearly 17 seconds faster than the second-place competitor and broke the NCAA regional qualifying standard by nearly 10 seconds. Her time was also just 3.16 slower than her personal best.
In the 1,500-meter run, fifth-year senior Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) took fifth place in a field of 48, clocking in with a career-best 4:28.53 and missing out on the NCAA regional qualifying standard by just 0.73 seconds.
In the 5,000-meter run, junior/sophomore Laura Brosius (Saline, Mich./Saline) took sixth place in a personal-best time of 17:31.86.
In the hammer throw, senior Ashley Eckel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) finished 10th in a field of 31 competitors with a season-best toss of 170-10, while senior Tara Kennedy (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) took 14th spot with a season-best throw of 156-9.
Competition at the Florida Relays continues through Saturday (March 26).
