Michigan Splits Pair of Games to Open Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 13 University of Michigan women's water polo team split its first two games of the Indiana Invite on Saturday (April 2). The Wolverines earned a 9-5 victory over Colorado State to open the tournament but fell to No. 10 San Jose Sate in sudden-victory overtime, 10-9. Against the Spartans, Michigan came back from an 8-5 deficit to start the fourth quarter, but a SJSU goal with 0:25 to play in the first sudden-victory period ended the game. Both matches were played at Indiana's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) led the Wolverines offensively with five goals over the two games to set a U-M record with 56 goals this season. Jo Antonsen (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura HS) also had a strong offensive day with three goals. Defensively, Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) tied a season high with 16 saves against San Jose State and Sally Stone (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) made eight saves against Colorado State.
Against Colorado State, the Wolverines built a 4-0 lead after the first period of play and cruised on to victory. Welch tallied three of U-M's first four goals, giving the Wolverines a 2-0 lead midway through the opening period. After Antonsen made the score 3-0, Welch completed her hat trick with a marker late in the first quarter.
The Rams got on the board with a marker at the 4:59 mark of the second quarter, but the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in the period. At the half, Michigan held a 6-2 lead.
The Wolverines continued to control the game, pushing their lead to 7-2 with at the midpoint of the third quarter. Colorado State closed the gap to 7-3 with 2:51 to play in the third period, but Michigan scored two more goals to take a commanding 9-3 lead into the fourth quarter. The Rams added on two goals in the final period to close out the scoring at 9-5 in favor of the Wolverines.
Against San Jose State, the Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the game, but Meg Knudtsen (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) tied the game midway through the period. Both teams added on one more goal over the next four minutes to make the score 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.
With the score still knotted at 3-3 at the midpoint of the second quarter, Welch gave the Wolverines a 4-3 advantage with her first goal of the game. San Jose State, however, answered with back-to-back goals in the final minute of the second period to take a 5-4 lead at the half.
The Spartans continued their run to start the third quarter, scoring a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the stanza to take a 7-4 lead. The Wolverines answered with a marker at 2:26 of the third quarter, but SJSU reestablished its three-goal lead with a score with just 34 seconds remaining in the period to make the score 8-5 heading into the final period.
The Wolverines began their comeback with a goal by Carly Strub (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck HS) with 4:14 to play. After Michigan drew to within one, 8-7, with just over two minutes to play, Knudtsen put away the equalizer with her second goal of the game at 1:48 of the fourth quarter. Neither team was able to add on the game-winner over the final 1:30 of the game and the teams prepared for overtime.
The Wolverines struck first in the first overtime period with a goal by Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) out of the hole set with just 44 seconds left in the stanza. The Spartans, however, tied the game with a goal off of an offensive rebound with just 22 seconds remaining. In the second overtime, neither team was able to score, sending the game into a sudden-victory period.
The Wolverines struggled in the first sudden-victory period and were able to muster only one offensive possession in the frame. After the Wolverines killed back-to-back power plays for the Spartans, San Jose State collected yet another offensive rebound and finally put away the game winner with a maker by Katie Morgan with 25 seconds left in the period.
Michigan (18-11) will close out the Indiana Invite with a match against No. 14 UC Davis on Sunday (April 3) at 10 a.m. EST/CDT.
