PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Junior/sophomore Andrew Bauer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) netted an NCAA regional-qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the University of Michigan men's track and field team on the first day of competition at the Penn Relays on Thursday (April 28) at Franklin Field.
Boasting a personal-best time of 9:04.49, Bauer shaved more than 12 seconds from his previous mark in the event, which he recorded in his outdoor season debut at the Raleigh Relays (Aprl 25-26). The performance earned him a runner-up finish in the college division race as the Wolverine crossed the finish line less than two seconds behind first-place Jeff Day of Tennessee.
Sophomore Ethan Brown (Lowell, Mass./Lowell HS) also registered an impressive personal best for the Wolverines in the 10,000-meter run -- the final event of the evening's distance slate -- with a showing of 30:42.46. Claiming 24th place, Brown improved his time in the event by more than four minutes.
The Wolverines will return to the track tomorrow (Friday, April 29) for the second day of action at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. U-M's first event of the day will be the 400-meter hurdles, slated for a 9 a.m. start at Franklin Field.
