COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team had contributions from its field eventers on day two of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, scoring in the shot put and the heptathlon Saturday (May 14) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Senior Ashley Eckel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) took third in the shot put, while senior/junior Jennifer Williams (Burton, Mich./Atherton) took sixth in her first-ever Big Ten heptathlon. Also, senior Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame) broke Michigan's 100-meter dash record, winning her preliminary heat in 11.41 to shave 0.01 seconds off the previous record that had stood for 11 years.

Eckel added a third-place shot put finish to her sixth place in the hammer throw.
Eckel had a career-best performance in the shot, taking third place with a regional qualifying and career-best toss of 48-6 3/4 to earn six points for the Wolverines. She eclipsed her seventh-place showing at the 2004 Big Ten Outdoor Championships and has regionally qualified in the hammer throw and shot put.
Williams placed sixth in the heptathlon and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with 5,034 points, earning three points for the Wolverines. In the final event of the heptathlon, Williams won the 800-meter run in 2:16.45, and she had a season-best performance in the long jump, placing ninth with a jump of 17-8 3/4. Junior Beth Vinckier (Yale, Mich./Yale) took 14th in the heptathlon and had a personal-best throw of 84-3 in the javelin.
Hauser-Price finished first in her heat with a time of 11.41, 0.01 seconds faster than Richelle Webb's school-record performance in 1994. Hauser-Price bettered her own career record by 0.10 seconds and finished 0.14 seconds faster than the next best qualifier. She also ran the second fastest time in the 200-meter dash trials, clocking in at 24.05 and winning her heat to advance to Sunday's final.
Fifth-year senior Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) took seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a regional qualifying time of 10:36.26, while junior/sophomore Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) claimed eighth with a regional-qualifying time of 10:42.03, but nobody could catch Illinois' Cassie Hunt who set a facility record with a first-place time of 10:14.02. Parker has now scored in back-to-back steeplechases at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, having finished fifth in 2004.
In the 1,500-meter run preliminaries, fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell) and senior/junior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) posted the two fastest times despite finishing well below their season bests. Gallo used her kick in the final 300 meters to move from the fourth position to first and clock in at 4:30.72, winning her heat by almost two seconds, while Feldkamp won her heat in 4:32.92 -- after leading the race from the gun -- also almost two seconds faster than the next best competitor. Gallo's performance was 10.25 second slower than her season best, while Feldkamp clocked in 7.02 seconds slower than her season top time, leaving a lot of gas in the tank for both athletes for Sunday's finals.
Senior captain Keri Kirk (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) took fourth in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:00.91 for a season-best time to advance to Sunday's finals. The Wolverine senior led the race coming out of the final bend but was caught down the final stretch by Minnesota's Melissa Steele. Sophomore Kiana Stringfield (Midland, Mich./Midland) had the eighth-fastest time in the prelims, clocking in at 1:02.48.
Junior Shavonne Maclin (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School) qualified for the finals of the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.98, taking third in the second heat.
Michigan competes in the final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships Sunday (May 15) beginning at 11:40 a.m. with the triple jump. Competition comcludes at 3:33 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.
