COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Trailing first-place Penn State by 23.5 points heading into the final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships Sunday (May 15), the University of Michigan women's track and field team took 16 points from senior Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame) and 14 from fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell) to claw back into the hunt but was forced to settle for third place with 110.5 points at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Seeking a fourth straight Big Ten outdoor title and the fourth triple crown -- titles in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field -- in program history, Michigan finished 2.5 points behind second-place Penn State and well behind Big Ten champion Illinois (135).
Hauser-Price posted runner-up performances in the 100- and 200-meter dash, while Gallo won the 1,500-meter run and a placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run. Michigan's 800-meter threesome of junior/sophomore Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac), freshman Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) and fifth-year senior Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian) placed first, third and seventh, respectively, for 18 points, while sophomore Bridgette Maynard (Madison, Mich./Bishop Foley) and senior Tara Kennedy (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) took third and eighth in the discus. Senior/junior Stephanie Linz (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and senior/junior Jennifer Williams (Burton, Mich./Atherton) scored in the high jump as well, but Illinois and Penn State put up too many points down the stretch to remain ahead.

Erdman kept alive U-M's streak of victories in the Big Ten outdoor 800-meter run.
Junior/sophomore Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) also took second in the 5,000-meter run, while senior/junior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) finished fourth in the 1,500 meters to earn valuable points for the Wolverines.
Hauser-Price finished second in the 100-meter dash, losing by 0.002 seconds to Ohio State's Jenna Harris in a photo finish, and took second in the 200-meter dash 45 minutes later, clocking in at 23.85. Hauser-Price has scored in the 100- and 200-meter dash in each of the last three Big Ten Outdoor Championships, earning her best result in the 200-meter dash and matching her second-place 100-meter dash finish from 2004.
Gallo scorched the field in the 1,500-meter run, taking first in 4:21.48 -- exactly three seconds faster than the next-best competitor -- and defending her Big Ten outdoor title. Gallo scored in the 1,500-meter run in each of the last three Big Ten Outdoor Championships, winning in 2005 and 2004 and finishing third in 2003. Her performance in her final Big Ten 1,500-meter run was the fastest of her championships career. Feldkamp took fourth place for four points, clocking in at 4:26.12 for her second regional qualifying time of the year.
Michigan picked up 18 points in the 800-meter run with a first-place finish by Erdman, a third-place showing by Edwards and a seventh-place result for Jones. Erdman picked up her first Big Ten outdoor title with a career-best run of 2:05.45,while Edwards placed third in her first Big Ten Outdoor Championships with a time of 2:09.02 to regionally qualify for the second time this season. Jones picked up a pair of important points with a seventh-place finish, clocking in at 2:13.20 to equal her seventh-place showing at the 2004 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Michigan has won the last seven outdoor 800-meter run titles, dating back to 1999.
Walter took second in the 5,000-meter run with a season-best time of 16:34.55, while Gallo took fifth in her first 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:44.75 to give Michigan 12 much-needed points, but Illinois' Cassie Hunt won the event and Jaime Tutilli took third to keep Illinois in front of third-place Michigan by 19 points. Walter finished second in the 5,000-meter run at the 2003 Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Maynard and Kennedy combined for seven points in the discus thanks to Maynard's third-place toss of 162-3 and Kennedy's career-best toss of 150-0. Maynard regionally qualified for the third time this season in the discus, but it was Kennedy's performance that was the most impressive. Kennedy topped her career-best performance in the discus by 18 inches (set in 2003) and threw 9-3 better than her previous best this season.
Linz took fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 5-8 3/4 and Williams tied for fifth with a clearance of 5-7 to pick up 7.5 points and help Michigan close in on second-place Penn State. Linz upped her season-best jump by 3.75 inches and regionally qualified after struggling through most of the outdoor season. Williams finished her championships earning 5.5 points for the Wolverines with her performance in the heptathlon and high jump.
Sophomore Kiana Stringfield (Midland, Mich./Midland) and senior Keri Kirk (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) racked up five points in the 400-meter hurdles with Stringfield taking sixth place in 1:01.24 and Kirk crossing seventh with a time of 1:01.78. Stringfield's time was a personal best, while Kirk's was her fastest time of the season.
U-M's 4x100-meter relay team picked up a point in the first scored event of the day, clocking in at 45.86 for eighth place. Hauser-Price, Kirk, sophomore Chanelle Campbell (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) and junior Shavonne Maclin (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School) recorded U-M's second-fastest 100-meter relay time of the season.
Michigan will take a week off before sending its regional qualifiers to the NCAA Mideast Regional on Friday and Saturday, May 27-28, in Bloomington, Ind.
