Wake Forest Defeats U-M to Complete ACC Sweep

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan field hockey team fell just short against three-time defending NCAA champion Wake Forest on Sunday (Aug. 28) at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, losing 2-1 after the Demon Deacons tallied the deciding goal midway through the second half. It marks the third straight season that the Wolverines suffered a sweep at the annual early-season tournament.
Senior/junior Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), who broke the Wolverines' sophomore goals record last season, picked up where she left off with the lone U-M goal late in the first half. Playing in the high forward position, Morris was left alone near the WFU cage, setting up a one-on-one between herself and Demon Deacon goalkeeper Kristina Gagliardi. The Wolverine captain made good on the opportunity, flipping the ball over a sprawling Gagliardi as the Deacon keeper came out to the top of the circle to challenge. It was just Michigan's first shot of the game, and Morris gave the Wolverines the initial advantage at the 21:53 mark.
The advantage would be shortlived as the Demon Deacons' Kristi Harshman knotted the score at 1-1 less than three minutes later directly off of a WFU penalty corner. Assists on the play went to Lauren Crandell and Jamie Whitten for the push and the stop, respectively.
The game remained tied through much of the second frame as the two teams evenly traded shots until Michelle Kansold tallied the deciding marker at 53:37. The goal resulted from another Wake Forest penalty corner as the Demon Deacons flurried around the U-M cage with a pair of initial shots before slamming home a rebound on their third attempt.
Wake Forest outshot the Wolverines 22-7 and outcornered them 7-2. Junior goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) was solid in the U-M cage, earning a career-high 14 saves in the losing effort, while Gagliardi made four stops on Michigan's five shots on goal.
U-M will return to the road next weekend, heading out east for a pair of non-conference contests. Michigan will square off against Maryland in College Park, Md., on Friday (Sept. 2) at 7 p.m. before venturing to Philadelphia, Pa., on Sunday (Sept. 4) for a noon meeting against Temple.

Senior/Junior Captain Katie Morris
On the Wolverines' opening-weekend play ... "We really saw some of the best competition this weekend that we'll see all year, so I think it was good for us to get the jitters out early. We take a lot of good things away from this weekend; we were right with both teams throughout our games, and we were able to see where we matched up. We never gave up and kept fighting until the last second. Just the improvement from Saturday to Sunday was exponential."
