Michigan Cannot Finish in Upset Loss at Miami (Ohio)

OXFORD, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Miami (Ohio) on Sunday (Sept. 11) at Miami Soccer Field. Despite an 18-2 advantage in shots, including 12 shots in the second half, the Wolverines could not finish. Freshman Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) had a career-high six shots, but the RedHawks' goal at 18:53 of the first half held up to be the game-winner.
The Wolverines dominated offensively in the first half. Michigan's best chance came early off a corner kick, but the Wolverines could not capitalize. The RedHawks' one shot at 18:53 proved to be a big one as Megan Ortner sent a cross to sophomore midfielder Lindy Slinger, who headed it far post past Michigan goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). The Wolverines entered the half down 1-0 despite carrying play for the majority of the half.
The Wolverines had numerous second-half chances right in front of the net, but again the ball did not cross the goal line. Sophomore midfielder Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) nearly tied the game with less than two minutes remaining. Artsis settled a ball right in front of the RedHawks net but was denied by Miami goalkeeper Shannon Chew.
The Wolverines return home Friday (Sept. 16) to face the Western Michigan Broncos under the lights at the U-M Soccer Field at 7 p.m.

Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On today's game ... "We came out energized, and the first five minutes of the game we were all over them. They got a goal on us and we didn't put the game away when we had an opportunity to. The longer you let these games go, the harder it is to keep yourself sharp. That really hurt us, not putting the game away when we had an opportunity to."
On allowing very few shots this past weekend ... "Our goal is to get shutouts and (allowing) a goal is not a good defensive effort. I think we are doing our job as far as keeping the shots down, but we just can't let some of these goals go in. We've got to keep ourselves in the game. This is the first time that it has really hurt us so it's a good learning experience."
