BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team started off its fall season with a trio of head races against Eastern Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame on Sunday (Sept. 18) on Belleville Lake. The Wolverines, Spartans and Fighting Irish boated three eights with the EMU Eagles sending out two. Michigan's third eight was victorious in the first two 3,000-meter pieces before finishing second to MSU's first eight in the third piece. Stroke limits for the day were set at 25 strokes per minute.
The Maize and Blue's third eight won the first race in a time of 9:52, just two seconds ahead of MSU's number two boat. U-M's second eight was third in 9:59, while the first eight took seventh place in a time of 10:04.
Going the opposite direction on the lake did not affect the Wolverines' third eight as it finished first in 9:28. Michigan State's first, second and third eights were second through fourth in 9:34, 9:34 and 9:40, respectively. Michigan's second eight was sixth (9:44), and its first eight was 10th (9:58).
The final race of the day was won by the Michigan State first eight in 10:00. U-M's third eight was again near the top, crossing the finish line in 10:03 to earn second. Michigan's first eight was fourth (10:08), and the second eight was fifth (10:12).
Michigan's next event is in two weeks when the Ohio State Buckeyes come to Belleville Lake on Saturday, Oct. 1. The start time for the regatta has yet to be determined.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Mark Rothstein
On if he is pleased with today's event ... "It's very early. We just wanted to execute what we've been working on in practice in a race. We wanted to get out with some good competition and get a starting point for the fall."
On what he can take away from the races ... "Clearly, we have a long way to go. We're really young. Like everyone in the country we're not that fast right now. That's okay. We have seven and a half months to change that. We have a lot work to do technically and physiologically."
