Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Burnett
On tonight's game ... "It was a disappointing loss. I'm disappointed for our kids and I'm disappointed for our fans. We had a great crowd tonight. We get the lead and basically Notre Dame hits some really big shots. Of course we feel like we could have guarded better. I didn't like the way we finished the game, which isn't a surprise to anybody. We wanted to execute better and we didn't want to give them the big shots, that's a given. I think a game's outcome doesn't always mean the very end of the game. I thought we guarded extremely well for the entire first half. We had seven possessions at the start of the second half where we basically gave them layups. Of course our frustration continues to be with our turnovers. Playing that hard defensivley, and then putting ourselves back at the defensive end, is very frustrating. It's an area we've concentrated on. We were very well prepared to play this Notre Dame team. We would have liked to hit a few free throws and not fouled at the end. It was a great game, it was just frustrating that we gave up the lead."
On the play of Michigan's bench in the second half ... "Sometimes subbing people in can give you a little more energy, and that one group that came in did a great job of getting us back in the game. Katie Dierdorf is always very sure offensively when she gets her hands on the basketball. Kalyn McPherson really showed us some great minutes when Notre Dame was putting some great pressure on us. During that stretch, Janelle Cooper hit some big shots. We guarded well during the entire game, except for the first seven possessions of the second half, and then didn't guard well enough to eliminate their threes in the end."
On Krista Phillips' defensive presence in the game ... "The great thing Krista Phillips does for us is what we call 'owning the lane.' Very rarely do we give up uncontested layups when she is out there. She just has a great feel for the game. Our struggle was when she had to sit, because we started to give up some easy opportunities."
On whether she can take any positives away from the game ... "When you lose the way we lost tonight, I don't know if anything feels good right now. We executed well against the zone. We still had some shot-clock violations, which was frustrating. Again, I thought we defended extremely well for a very long period of time. It would feel a lot better if we had won it."
