U-M Starts Season Slowly Against Princeton and Brown

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The No. 7 University of Michigan women's rowing team began its 2006 spring season on Saturday (March 25) with third-place finishes by its first and second varsity eights against No. 1 Princeton and No. 6 Brown.

The first varsity eight race was won easily by the Princeton Tigers in a time of 7:00.9. Brown was second (7:10.2), more than nine seconds of the leader's pace, and the Wolverines were third in a time of 7:21.1.

The winning margin was much narrower in second varsity eight sprint. The Bears earned first in 7:25.1, beating Princeton (7:27.5) by more than a half length. The Maize and Blue crew crossed the finish line in 7:34.0.

Princeton's 'A' and 'B' boats in the first varsity four captured first (8:26.9) and second (8:35.9), respectively. Brown was third in 8:38.2, and Michigan was fourth (8:43.0).

The novice eight race went to Princeton (7:15.0), followed by Brown (7:25.9) and Michigan (7:41.7).

Michigan heads to Columbus, Ohio, next Saturday (April 1) to take part in the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual. The Wolverines will face Virginia and Duke on the Scioto River.
