Michigan Wins Challenge Cup Point vs. Michigan State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team received two strong efforts from its first varsity eight on Saturday (April 1) at the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual on the Scioto River. The Wolverine first eight beat Michigan State in the morning to clinch the Challenge Cup point between the two rivals. In the afternoon, U-M was barely edged at the line by No. 3 Virginia by a margin of 0.33 of a second.
Michigan's morning races included Michigan State and Duke. As a team, Michigan clinched the rowing Challenge Cup point over MSU by a collective score of 14-9. The Wolverines won the first varsity eight (nine points), second varsity four (one point), first novice eight (three points) and second novice eight (one point) races.
The Maize and Blue first varsity eight captured first place in a time of 6:38.50, more than a boat length ahead of the Spartans (6:43.50). The Blue Devils finished in 6:55.79. Michigan received nine points for placing ahead of MSU.
The second varsity eight race went to the Spartans (6:45.50) as U-M was six seats back in 6:47.44. Duke crossed the line in 7:13.60. MSU earned six points for finishing ahead of U-M.
The finish for the first varsity four was the same as the second eight with MSU placing first (7:39.00), Michigan in second (7:53.66) and Duke in third (8:20.83). The Spartans earned three points for the win.
Michigan won the second varsity four in 8:00.30 and earned a point over MSU. The Spartans were second (8:12.17), followed by Duke (8:24.90). The Wolverine novices won both the first and second novice eight sprints. The first boat garnered three points and the second eight picked up one.
In the afternoon, the first varsity eight was very competitive as the Virginia Cavaliers hit the finish line in 6:36.13, just a bowball in front of the Wolverine crew (6:36.46). The second varsity eight race also went to UVA (6:43.87 to 6:48.45).
The first varsity four race was won by Virginia in 7:46.50. U-M was two lengths back in 7:53.00. The Cavaliers had two entries in the second varsity four race, both finishing ahead of the Wolverines (8:09.06).
Virginia completed the sweep with the first novice eight win. The second novice eight race included the Spartans, who won the event, followed by UVA and U-M.
Michigan will be back in Columbus, Ohio, next Saturday (April 8) when it opposes Southern California and Tennessee in a dual race format.
