WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team won all three of its CWPA League Tournament contests on Saturday (March 4) at the Henry Memorial Center. Carrie Frost (Saline, Mich./Saline) highlighted Michigan's first win of the day, a 14-5 victory against Washington & Jefferson, with three goals and three assists. Michelle Keeley (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) tallied Michigan's second hat trick of the weekend in a 15-3 win over Grove City. In the final game of the day against Slippery Rock, the Wolverines were a perfect 5-for-5 on the power play, while Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley) and Kristin Hoogenboom (Portland, Ore./Sunset) each scored a hat trick in a 13-6 triumph.
Michigan jumped all over Washington & Jefferson early, scoring twice in the fourth minute of the first period to take a 2-0 lead with Welch and Chatigny each scoring on the counterattack. Frost and Kelsey Haley (Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo) answered two W&J goals to give the Wolverines a 4-2 lead heading into the second period. Haley's marker came on the power play with one second remaining in the first frame.
Michigan connected twice in the half court to open the second, building a 6-2 advantage. After another Presidents goal, Kaitlin Prijatel (North Tustin, Calif./Foothill) scored her first of two goals on the morning and Frost completed the hat trick with 49 seconds remaining, giving Michigan an 8-3 halftime lead.
Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) netted Michigan's only marker of the third quester in the final minute to extend the lead to 9-4. U-M ran away with the game in the fourth, scoring five times. Welch sailed one into the back of the floating canvas 18 seconds after W&J's fifth goal and the Wolverines left with a 14-5 win.
In the second game of the day, the Wolverines tallied five goals in the first three minutes of the opening period against Grove City. Wesley Ellison (Portola Valley, Calif./Palo Alto) got U-M on the board with a nifty shot out of the two meter just 13 seconds in. Amy Cuckovich (Davis, Calif./Davis) ended the five-goal run, scoring her first goal of the weekend from beyond five meters. Frost kept the momentum going 16 seconds into the second to make it 6-0 and helped U-M rebound from a Grove City goal, netting her second marker of the contest midway through the second. Kristin Hoogenboom (Portland, Ore./Sunset) finished the first-half scoring, ripping one home out of the two meter to push the advantage to 8-1.
Keeley reeled off a hat trick in the first three minutes of the third, scoring three straight to make it 11-1. Nicole Santarosa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Peninsula) extended the lead to 13-1 on the power play with one second remaining in the period.
Sally Stone (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) and Kristen Davis (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) took advantage of their time in the field in the fourth by each scoring her first goal of the season, giving Michigan a 15-1 lead. Grove City made it 15-3 late in the game as Michigan used four different players in the goalkeeping position in the victory.
U-M took care of business against Slippery Rock in the third game of the day. Hyrne opened the scoring 43 seconds in on the 6-on-5, making it 1-0. Hoogenboom scored two of Michigan's four remaining goals of the period to help the Wolverines to a 5-2 lead after the first. Keeley netted the only marker of an uneventful second quarter on the power play and Michigan went into the half up 6-2.
Welch pushed the lead to 7-2 just 33 seconds in with a man advantage and Lindsey Hitchcock (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored her first goal of the season from several meters out less than a minute later to increase the advantage to six goals. Welch finished off her hat trick with a 6-on-5 tally after the Rock's third goal of the game to move the score to 9-3. Hoogenboom followed a Chatigny goal to complete her hat trick out of the two meter. Frost added a goal from the outside with a minute remaining in the third and the score stood at 12-5 heading into the final frame.
The two teams traded goals in the fourth, with Hyrne scoring for U-M on the counterattack and the game ended in a 13-6 Wolverine advantage as Michigan finished the day 3-0.
The Wolverines stay in the state of Pennsylvania, traveling to Erie for three more league games. U-M faces Penn State-Behrend tomorrow morning (Sunday, March 5) at 9:30 a.m. Michigan then takes on Gannon at 12:30 p.m. and Mercyhurst at 3:30 p.m.
