First Varsity Eight Splits Races with Tennessee, USC

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team split its races Saturday (April 8), earning a win against No. 17 Tennessee while losing to No. 3 Southern Cal. U-M's second varsity eight swept its two races on the Scioto River.

In the morning, Michigan's first varsity eight defeated Tennessee by open water in 6:24.78. UT crossed the line in 6:29.26. The second varsity eight also captured a win, 6:32.65 to 6:36.91. The first varsity four's finish of 7:32.35 was just off the pace set by the Volunteers (7:31.22).

The Maize and Blue first and second novice eights each garnered victories over Ohio State's crews.

In the afternoon, the Wolverines were beaten by half a boat length in their first varsity eight sprint against the Women of Troy. USC crossed the line in 6:21.40 with U-M following at 6:23.24. The second varsity eight returned the favor it its race by pulling out a win by 2.7 seconds (6:29.20 to 6:31.90). Michigan's first varsity four downed USC 7:37.40 to 7:47.69.

The novice eight race included both U-M eights as well as one OSU crew, and Michigan's entries placed first and second.

Michigan will conclude its regular-season schedule next Saturday (April 16) when it travels to Madison, Wis., to take on Wisconsin and Iowa.
