U-M's First Varsity Eight Sweeps Iowa and Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team had its first varsity eight sweep Iowa and No. 15 Wisconsin on Saturday (April 15) on Lake Wingra to finish off the regular season. The second varsity eight defeated the Hawkeyes but lost to the Badgers.

U-M's first varsity eight shell dispatched Iowa in a time of 6:32.5. The Hawkeyes finished a boat back in 6:37.2. The second varsity eight easily beat Iowa in a time of 6:32.4. Iowa crossed the line in 6:56.0 with the UW lightweight crew sandwiched in between in 6:39.0.

With a time of 7:18.1, the first varsity four placed second behind Michigan State (7:15.9) but ahead of Wisconsin (7:24.7). The second varsity four won its race against the Wisconsin lightweight crew in 7:22.3. The first novice eight beat Iowa, while the second novice eight took third behind Iowa and the UW lightweight boat.

In the afternoon, U-M's first varsity eight turned in a time of 6:30.4 for an open-water triumph over the Badgers (6:38.0). The Maize and Blue second varsity eight missed out on a win by 1.0 second as UW finished in 6:29.1.

The first varsity four (7:27.9) earned third place behind Michigan State (7.22.0) and Wisconsin (7:27.5). The second varsity four race was extremely tight as all three boats finished within 1.1 seconds of each other. UW's "A" boat crossed in 7:35.7, followed by U-M in 7:36.3 and the UW "B" shell in 7:36.8.

Both of U-M's novice eights lost to Wisconsin.

The Wolverines will be off next weekend before traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., for the 2006 Big Ten Championships on Saturday, April 29.
