Wolverines Earn CSCAA All-Academic Honors

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team and three of its student-athletes were honored with College Swimming Coaches Association of America All-Academic awards for the 2005-06 season. To receive individual All-Academic honors, student-athletes must earn a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average and qualify for the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA championships.
In addition to the team being honored for maintaining a minimum combined GPA of 2.8, Michigan's three senior team captains earned individual recognition: Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School), and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS). All three are continuing to train at U-M with coach Bob Bowman and Michigan's club team, Club Wolverine.
A five-time NCAA All-American, DeJong was the 2004, '05 and '06 Big Ten Conference champion in the 200-yard backstroke, an event in which he holds the Big Ten record. DeJong will graduate in Fall 2006 with a bachelor's degree in English.
Michigan's 2006 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, Tarwater will graduate in Fall 2006 with a political science degree. He is a three-time NCAA champion, winning the 200-yard butterfly national title in 2005 and '06. At the 2005 U.S. National Championships, he won gold medals in the 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter freestyle relay.
The 2006 Big Ten Conference Male Athlete of the Year, Vanderkaay is a five-time NCAA champion and repeated as the 500-yard freestyle national champion this season. He has earned a total of 16 All-America honors, including four his senior season. A three-time Big Ten Swimmer of the Year (2004, '05, '06), Vanderkaay is scheduled to graduate with a degree in general biology in Fall 2006.
