ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated Detroit 3-0 in an exhibition match on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 20) at U-M Soccer Field. Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) tallied two goals and Niki Moran (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) netted one marker for the Wolverines, who outshot the Titans 23-5. The game was played in three 35-minute periods.
Dobbyn opened the scoring 7:51 in to put U-M up 1-0. Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) flicked a pass to Dobbyn inside the 18-yard box. Dobbyn then took a touch and placed the ball into the left corner for the score. Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) also earned a helper.
Michigan struck again at 57:12 as Brittany Magee (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) took a ball from Banco down the sideline and sent a cross to Moran, who volleyed a rope into the side of the net. U-M held a 9-1 shot advantage in the second frame and took a 2-0 lead into the final period.
Dobbyn earned her second score with less than a minute to play at 104:17. Sheera Goren (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) took a touch from Coffman and fed Dobbyn in the box. Dobbyn dribbled around the Detroit goalkeeper and poked a shot into the goal to move the score to 3-0.
All three Michigan goalkeepers saw action. Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) played the first period, Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) played the second, and Lindsay Yakel (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) guarded the net in the third.
Michigan suits up for its first regular-season game next Friday (Aug. 25) against Western Michigan at 4:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Field.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the contest against Detroit ... "We had some good possession and good opportunities and good build-ups. It was a good scrimmage. We got to see a different formation for us in a couple of periods. Now we want to get sharper and sharper and create better final balls and final passes that will result in more goals."
On the improved defensive play ... "We want to be really solid front to back defending; forwards on back. I thought we played composed, organized and covered for each other. I am pretty happy."
