COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team yielded a second-half goal and fell, 1-0, to Ohio State Friday (Oct. 12) in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Junior goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made five saves in the effort, while Kristin Thomas (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) lead the Wolverines with three shots.

A physical first stanza saw 14 fouls called and a yellow card issued to freshman forward Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester). The Buckeyes doubled Michigan in shots, 6-3, but Gates was up to the task, stopping all of OSU's first-half comers.

The Buckeyes got the game's lone goal in the 58th minute to take a 1-0 lead in the second half. Ashley Bowyer faked a shot that drew Gates in before she passed to Laura Roberts, who chipped a shot over the sprawling Wolverine goaltender into the net.

In the 69th minute, Gates had to go toe-to-toe on a penalty kick with Lara Dickenmann. The Michigan goalkeeper was able to knock down the attempt with a diving save to keep the Wolverines within striking distance.

As time ticked off the clock, the Wolverines picked up the pace and fired five shots in the final 10 minutes. The best of these late chances came off of a corner kick pass to Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) and a shot off the foot of Thomas. In both cases, the Ohio State netminder was there to make the stop, holding the ball and ending the threat.

Michigan continues its weekend road swing with a trip to Penn State for a Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14) match-up with the Nittany Lions at noon.
