BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team saw its 11-game winning streak end Saturday (Oct. 27) as the Wolverines fell 1-0 to California at the Golden Bears' Maxwell Family Field. U-M (13-5, 6-0 Big Ten) outshot the Bears 19-9 in the contest and outcornered them 6-5 but could not capitalize on opportunities en route to their first shutout loss of the season.
California's Jennifer Crane scored the lone goal of the contest at the 50:08 mark, using a wide angle within the circle to beat junior/sophomore Paige Pickett(Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas). The goal came admidst a dominant Michigan half during which the Wolverines outshot California 14-4.
The Golden Bears established the early tone in the contest, holding Michigan without a shot until the 18th minute while peppering Pickett with several shots on goal, including one on the direct shot following a penalty corner with time expired in the frame. Michigan's best opportunity came midway through the half when the Wolverines drew a corner and fired three quick shots on goal within a one-minute span.
All three of Pickett's saves came in the first half, while Knoche registered 12 stops in the Golden Bears' cage. It was the first shutout performance against the Wolverines in more than a year, dating back to last season's road game at Penn State (Sept. 29, 2006).
Michigan will wrap up its regular-season schedule tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 28) with a non-conference match against Stanford in Palo Alto, Cailf. The game is slated for a noon PDT start at Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
