LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team qualified three competitors for the finals during preliminary action Thursday (Feb. 8) on day one of the Winter Cup. Senior/junior co-captain Andrew Elkind (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and sophomores Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic HS) and Ralph Rosso (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney HS) all qualified for the final round, scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 10) at 7:15 p.m. PST. The top 42 gymnasts from Thursday's two sessions qualified based on a points system.
The newly instituted International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) scoring rules were used at the meet. The system, which will be used at all elite level meets, incorporates credit for the routine's content, difficulty and execution. A gymnast's score is no longer limited to a maximum of 10.0. The new scoring system format is available at the USA Gymnastics site.
Freshman Mel Santander (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional HS) was the only Wolverine to compete in all of the events and posted an all-around score of 80.350, taking 27th place. Santander finished in the top 20 on the high bar, tying for 19th with a score of 13.500, and placed 34th on the pommel horse (13.200) and 33rd on the vault (14.950).
The highest individual placing for a Wolverine came on the still rings with Rosso taking sixth place with a score of 15.100. Rosso competed in every event except the high bar and added a top-20 finish on the vault, tying for 16th place with a routine of 13.600.
Catrambone took the second-highest placing for a U-M competitor, tying for seventh place on the high bar with a score of 14.800. Catrambone competed on the high bar, parallel bars and vault.
Elkind, who competed in five events (no floor), took 18th on the high bar with a 14.250. The senior/junior co-captain also tied for 20th on the rings (14.450) and parallel bars (14.35).
Former Wolverines Geoffrey Corrigan (Team Chevron) and Edward Umphrey also competed in the meet. Corrigan took 15th in the all-around with a score of 83.250, and his highest individual place was for 15th on the floor exercise (14.250). Umphrey competed in all events except for the high bar and tied for 36th on both the vault (14.900) and still rings (14.000).
